The New York Mets entered this afternoon’s game against the Diamondbacks having lost eight of their last nine games and 14 of of their last 16.  The luster of Matt Harvey‘s brilliant debut was starting to wear off for Mets fans as the team reverted back to it’s post-All-Star break swoon.  With New York badly needing another pick me up, their most reliable pitcher delivered another strong performance.

R.A. Dickey went out and dominated the Diamondbacks over seven strong innings of work in which he gave up only one unearned run on four hits while striking out eight en route to his 14th victory of the year.

Like the team as a whole, Dickey had struggled of late, adding to the plight of Mets fans.  After allowing 3+ earned runs only once over his first 14 starts,  R.A. had surrendered four or more runs in five of his previous six starts heading into Sunday.

With the win today Dickey begins a new streak after seeing his run of winning 11 straight decisions (the third-longest streak in franchise history) come to an end in his last start against the Nationals.  Today’s effort was huge for the Mets as it helped get both R.A. and the entire team back on track.  With any luck there will be a little momentum heading into the upcoming series with San Francisco and we can see this club get back to winning games on a consistent basis.
