According to what a source told Andy Martino of the Daily News, the Mets believe they can sign R.A. Dickey to a two-year contract extension, worth less than the three year, $36 million the Mets paid to Oliver Perez. Of course that doesn’t change the fact that the Mets are shopping him as is being reported by everyone at the GM Meetings, but I would have to think it does show how sincere Dickey is about wanting to remain a Met. Will it make a difference in the end? No. I don’t believe it will. The Mets will consider all their options, but I just don’t see them signing both Dickey and David Wright because then they will still have the same flexibility problem even when Johan Santana comes off the books in 2014 unless they increase payroll to $125 million. That’s a prospect I don’t ever see happening for the next five years at least. As far as Wright goes, they will give him whatever he want’s, even if he asks for the world. That’s how convinced I am that he’ll be back.
