The Miami Marlins won their first game of the Grapefruit League season on Monday with a 4-3 final score over the St. Louis Cardinals.   The game took place in Roger Dean Stadium which is the Spring home of both teams.     Greg Dobbs who signed a two year contract this past off-season led the way with a 3-3 game including two doubles, a home run and three runs batted in.   The veteran is expected to serve as a reserve corner infielder and pinch hit option once again in 2012.

Besides Dobbs’ spectacular day at the plate, there was a welcome sight for the Marlins on the mound as Josh Johnson pitched for the first time since last May.   The ace hit 93mph on the gun which is a great number for a first Spring outing.   He struck out two and worked 1.2 scoreless frames before exiting due to a 40-pitch limit.  When Johnson goes again in five days, it’s likely he will work a little longer.   Also seeing time on the mound in this game were Wade LeBlanc, Chad Gaudin, Gary Glover, Jose Ceda, Chris Hatcher and Daniel Jennings.   Hatcher served up all three runs in a wild ninth inning while Jennings shut the door to earn a save.  Johnson was credited with the win.

At the dish, the offense was mostly quiet outside of Dobbs’ efforts.  Gaby Sanchez had a run batted in while Donnie Murphy, Hanley Ramirez and Giancarlo Stanton each picked up a base hit in their first action of the Spring.    Most of the regulars exited the game two at-bats as is the norm for this early in the Grapefruit League season.

On Tuesday the Marlins will have a split squad.  Half the roster will take on the Tigers in Jupiter during the day while the other half will face the University of Miami at night in the first ever game for the Marlins at their new ballpark, Marlins Park.
