Welcome to Los Angeles Carlos Marmol. It’s hard to get really excited about this trade, but there may be some hope for it. In a swap of relievers who had been designated for assignment, the Cubs announced they have acquired Matt Guerrier from the Dodgers for Carlos Marmol and Chicago’s fourth international signing bonus slot. That slot is worth $209,700 in pool money, announced the Dodgers, who had a pool of $2,112,900. Of Marmol’s $9.8MM salary this year, about $4.8MM remains. The good news is the Cubs will pay nearly $2MM of his salary, tweets Tim Brown, plus the aforementioned pool money. Guerrier earns $3.75MM this year (plus a $750K installment of his signing bonus) in the final season of his three-year deal with Los Angeles. He has about $2.34MM remaining, so the Cubs will save roughly $500K in the deal, with that being said I got the Dodgers on the winning end of this deal. I think the Dodgers did a good job of swapping bad contracts, but getting clever with the financial aspect of trade. Kudos Colletti. Here’s an extra kicker, per Jayson Stark if the Dodgers end up releasing Marmol and he signs with another team, the Cubs will need to send additional money to the Dodgers. The Dodgers are doing their homework these days, especially with Stan Kasten around. It’s been refreshing to see Colletti not getting bamboozled on trades like during the McCourt era. Marmol has eradicated his status as a closer for the Cubs. Once an elite closer, he’s been nothing but a struggling nightmare on the mound. A 5.86 ERA, 6.8 BB/9, and 1.95 HR/9 in 27 2/3 innings is embarrassing for any pitcher, especially one with his talent. He began the season as the team’s closer, which backfired as he lost more trade value, and the closer job altogether after allowing five runs in his first three outings. Not what Marmol or the Cubs had in mind, now Marmol can only hope luck will swing his way in Los Angeles. Marmol, 30, joined the team’s bullpen in 2007, got his first All-Star appearance in 2008, and ascended to the Cubs’ closing job late in 2009. He peaked in 2010, becoming one of the best closers in all of baseball. Marmol struck out nearly 42% of batters faced while racking up 38 saves. Then came the payday, a three-year, $20MM extension in February 2011. Then came the downward spiral, his command issues became increasingly worrisome, BB/9 elevated, and the rest is history. The next steps, Marmol will head to the minors to make a few appearances in the minors. The Dodgers will no doubt be closely watching him hoping to correct whatever issues may lie beneath. The latest reclamation project for the boys in blue. The Dodgers are undoubtedly hoping that Marmol can help boost their bullpen numbers, who are currently second-to-last in bullpen ERA in the NL, with a 4.39 mark. This trade has the potential to benefit the bullpen, even if things don’t work out as hoped, there isn’t a whole lot of risk here. I’d rather take my chances on Marmol over Guerrier. That’s just me. Dodgers finalize trade for Carlos Marmol, staff does think they can fix him

While I was sleeping yesterday (of course), the Dodgers did indeed finalize a trade with the Cubs for right-handed reliever Carlos Marmol, cash, and international bonus pool money for Matt Guerrier. I didn’t write about it immediately because I figured my article on why he might be of interest to the Dodgers was sufficient. Plus, the breakdown of the details was a bit confusing...

Your Team’s New Trade Asset

For fans of Carlos Marmol, it’s been a confusing few days, even beyond the usual confusion baseline. On Tuesday, Marmol was shipped from the Cubs to the Dodgers.
