June 8-10

The Mariners (26-33) prepare for the World Series by hosting the dominant Dodgers (37-21) in a 3 game set.

Pitching match ups: Game 60: RHP – Nathan Eovaldi vs. RHP – Kevin Millwood

Game 1: Matchup | Preview, TV: 7:10 p.m. PST, ROOT (Seattle), PRIME (Los Angeles)

The M’s bats have been as lethal as lit matches in a dry forest on their recent road trip, but only 12 of the team’s 53 home runs have happened at home this season.  Kevin Millwood, who is really the only pitcher on staff who has experience with the Dodgers will try to push past the home field disadvantage as he steps up onto the hill for the M’s.

  • Current Line: 3-5 / 3.90 ERA / 28 BB / 46 SO / 1.39 ERA
  • The current dodgers have a .286 batting average against Millwood.

This will be the 22 year old youngster’s 3rd start of the season.  His first 2 starts were both losses despite his 2.86 ERA.  One advantage the Dodgers have is the fact that Adam Kennedy, who was an anchor man for the M’s last season has the inside edge on his former team while Seattle really has no experience to go on at all.

Nate was called up from AA and although he has some experience from his September call up last season, he is still really fresh.

  • Current Line in AA Chattanooga: 2-2 / 3.09 ERA / 13 BB / 30 SO / 1.23 WHIP
Game 61: LHP – Clayton Kershaw vs. LHP – Jason Vargas

A little lefty on lefty action happening in this game as Clayton Kershaw goes up against  Jason Vargas.  Vargas, hopes to continue his career season at home. Vargas is normally a very underrated pitcher but has looked great due to recieving run support from his offense. Vargas has won 3 of his last 5 starts receiving 29 runs of support over those five games.

The M’s have not hosted the Dodgers since the early 2000′s so they have a limited number of at bats against the Seattle pitching staff. The current dodgers have faced Vargas a total of 70 at bats and are hitting .329 against him as a team.  I’m hoping that is a skewed stat.

  • Vargas was good on the road trip, but he has been even better at home.  His 3.64 ERA is split between a 4.53 ERA away and a 1.91 ERA at home.

Clayton Kershaw received a no decision in his last outing despite pitching fairly well.  He was nursing an injury that sounded very superficial, a  case of plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

How would you like your health issues reported to the whole world?

Apparently it doesn’t bother him when he pitches, but the team could be keeping a close eye on him in this start.

millwood Dodgers vs Mariners in Seattle: Pitching, series preview, analysis & predictions

  • Current Line: 4-3 / 2.55 ERA / 9 BB / 19 SO /1.01 WHIP
  • Kershaw has shown a lot of control this season throwing lots of pitches for strikes.  That makes it hard to show patience at the plate.
Game 62: RHP – Chad Billingsly vs. ???

With Felix missing his last start, the M’s rotation has continued on without him.  However the team has been non committal on the King’s return.  I’m not sure why he wasn’t put on the DL right away.

  • Stay tuned

Billingsly helped contribute to Cliff Lee’s depression of not having a win yet this season.  That doesn’t bode well for the M’s offensive efforts in ‘unsafeco’ field.

  • Current line: 3-4 / 3.80 ERA / 26 BB / 63 SO / 1.40 WHIP
Dodgers VS Mariners Series Predictions

Game 1:

The Dodgers are having a bit of a miracle season, or more accurately a Magic season.  The bankruptcy problems and ownership issues really affected the team last season but those troubled days are in the past and the Dodgers are going to be tough to beat.

The good news is that the young pitcher on the mound for LA should be easier to beat than some of their other starters

Prediction:  Win (Mariners 6 – Dodgers 3)

Game 2:

The M’s are pretty heavily stacked in left handed batters so they struggle a bit more on these games, but it isn’t impossible, in fact the M’s, in my opinion are the best National League team out there.  Did I just say that?

Prediction: Win (Mariners 3 – Angels 2)

Game 3:

Without knowing who Wedge has to send to the mound the prediction doesn’t have much to go on, but I would be surprised if the M’s could take this game.

Prediction: Loss (Mariners 3 – Angels 5)

The teams have not faced each other since 2009, when Seattle took two of three. 2. Dodgers RF Andre Ethier broke out of an 0-for-16 slump with a two-run double on Thursday. He has not homered in 15 consecutive games.

Mariners ace Felix Hernandez is on schedule to start Sunday’s series finale after being held out of his last turn with back problems.
