After a somewhat shaky first outing in which he gave up two runs over innnings, while surrenedering three hits and walking three, Felix Doubront went out and and absolutely shoved against the Yankees last night. Going four scoreless innings, striking out three. The Yankees forced Doubront to go deep in to counts in order to get a better gauge of the young lefty. Felix ended up throwing 75 pitches which for a Grapefruit League game this early in the season is a whole helluva lot but it didn't seem to bother the kid very much. After the game he was quoted as saying, "I faced pretty good hitters; I just couldn't make them chase," Doubront said. "I feel very good about today. I showed what I've got and showed and the pitching coach that I've got something."With Vicente Padilla pitching well also the 5th starter spot may be starting to gain some faces. It will be nice if the Sox can widdle it down to just a couple guys over the next week or so. Nothing ...

Kevin Youkilis Looks 'Like a Totally Different Guy This Spring,' Poised to Bounce Back for Red Sox

The Red Sox are officially in the thick of their spring training schedule and from here on out, it's all baseball all the time for Boston. With that, comes plenty of discussion points, something that is even more true this season with all of the new faces in Red Sox camp. Don Orsillo tackles that element and more in the latest edition of his weekly mailbag. Who will be MVP this...

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Red Sox have received the player to be named in the Theo Epstein transaction. The team announced Thursday that right-handed pitcher Aaron Kurcz would be the last piece of the deal from the Cubs. Kurcz, 21, was an 11th round selection in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player’s Draft. Last season, Kurcz made 32 appearances –– 12 starts ––at High-A Daytona...

2012 season preview: Boston Red Sox

It was a trying season for the Boston Red Sox in 2011. They started off slow in April, played awesome from May-August, and completely collapsed in September, blowing the wild card on the final day of the season after a late-game rally at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox did a lot of retooling in the offseason, and now look to enter the 2012 season with a more solid...

Adrian Gonzalez Not Fond of Possibly Dabbling in Outfield, But Will Accept Role If Necessary

TAMPA, Fla. –– Adrian Gonzalez is a three-time Gold Glove Award winner as a first baseman. Although he's still penciled in to patrol that position this season, Gonzalez isn't exactly thrilled with Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine's potential plan of slotting him into the outfield this spring. "I told Bobby I'm not an outfielder," Gonzalez said Monday...

Q&A: Daniel Bard: Data-Influenced Conversion

Daniel Bard is moving into the Red Sox rotation this summer, and according to the stat-savvy flamethrower, data supports the decision. Bard went 2-9, 3.33 as a set-up man last year, but those aren’t the numbers he looked at when he began exploring a new role. The Boston right-hander explained his thought-process prior to Monday’s game in Fort Myers. —— Daniel Bard: “I...

Red Sox Spring Training News & Notes - 3/13

It was an interesting day yesterday with the Miami Marlins and Boston Red Sox at JetBlue Park. Josh Beckett struggled with his control early on only to turn in a nice performance on the mound. Andrew Bailey's command wasn't all there in his first spring training game. Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen got ejected. And finally, Pedro Ciriaco hit a two-run walk-off home run...

Kevin Youkilis Battling Leadoff As Red Sox Welcome Kyle Lohse, Cardinals to Fort Myers

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Kevin Youkilis will be leading for the Red Sox against the Cardinals, but don't read much into it. Bobby Valentine said the primary reason he has the third baseman in the leadoff spot is to give Youkilis a few extra at-bats. Here are the lineups. Red Sox Kevin Youkilis, 3B Jacoby Ellsbury, CF Dustin Pedroia, 2B Adrian Gonzalez, 1B David Ortiz, DH Cody Ross...

Red Sox 1, Yankees 0

Bobby Valentine smiled his big, wide smile, surrounded by media, talking about the Red Sox and the Yankees. Baseball's hottest rivalry gets a new provocateur this year. ''The intensity will be interesting. Looking forward to it? Who knows?'' he said. Valentine stood in the third base dugout at Steinbrenner Field before his Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees...

Ellsbury - Larger Than Life?

The Sox need a "larger-than-lifer". What I mean is-they need a man who can carry not only the team to a championship, but also inspire teammates to do so. The word "superstar" has been used so much that it no longer means a lot. "Larger than lifer" can probably be defined by who is one and who is not one. Ted Williams was one. Yaz was one. Pedro was...

Boston Red Sox 1 — New York Yankees 0   The 1-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox came on a costly error in right field that let the batter, Pedro Ciriaco, score the only run of tonight’s game. Ivan Nova started tonight’s game and exhibited control that didn’t reflect on his first 2 Spring [...]
