After missing the 2012 season due to Tommy John surgery, Tsuyoshi Wada is back on the mound for the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, the Norfolk Tides. (Photo credit: Elaina Ellis/Norfolk Tides) When the Baltimore Orioles named Dan Duquette as the new President of Baseball Operations, one of his goals was to improve the Orioles pitching by utilizing international scouting. Wei-Yin Chen was one of Duquette’s early signings. Chen has a record of 18-16 with a 3.72 ERA. In 2012 the 27-year-old Chen was the only O’s starter to win more than 10 games; he also led the club in strike outs with 154. Before Duquette signed Chen, he inked Tsuyoshi Wada to a two-year deal. Unfortunately for the Orioles Wada made one appearance for Triple-A Norfolk last year. He lasted 2 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on six hits. Wada then had to undergo Tommy John surgery and missed the remainder of the 2012 season. This season Wada has returned to baseball, he’s started 15 games for the Tides and is 4-5 with a 4.70 ERA. Since June 17, Wada has performed quite well for Norfolk (aside from his July 11 start against the Gwinnett Braves where he allowed seven runs on 13 hits in five innings). In his last nine starts, Wada has averaged close to six innings. In those starts he allowed a total of 18 runs (including the aforementioned shellacking by Gwinnett). His last two starts may have been his best of the season. On July 31, he went 6 2/3 innings, allowed no runs on five hits and struck out 10 Pawtucket Red Sox. Then on Aug. 8, Wada got his revenge on Gwinnett by allowing no runs on four hits in five innings, while striking out seven Braves. If Wada continues to impress through the rest of August, he might be called up to the Orioles in September when the rosters expand to 40 players. As the old baseball saying goes, “you can never have enough pitching,” and Wada could provide support for the Orioles in the final month of the regular season. Wada’s next start is scheduled for tomorrow at Noon against the Rochester Red Wings.
