Placido Polanco of the Phillies got his 2000th career hit last night. Now, what does this mean in the long run? Well....nothing. It's just catering to our fetish of round numbers. Since 1980, there are 89 people with 2000 hits. Really, 89? And that's only 30 years. Some of the players with 2000 hits include Todd Zeile, Tony Phillips, Mark Grudzielanek, Tim Wallach, Ruben Sierra, and so on. These aren't exactly household names by any stretch of the imagination. There are also 96 people in the last 30 years with more fWAR than Polanco, so it's not as if this is some sort of coincidental stat. At the end of the day, it's all well and good that Polanco has 2000 hits...but his legacy of a player hasn't changed at all.

Game of the Night: Indians 5, Twins 4. Jeanmar Gomez of the Indians allowed just one unearned run over seven innings, and left the game with a 4-1 lead. Then, Cleveland's bullpen collapsed, as Nick Hagadone and Vinnie Pestano combined to allow three runs in the eighth, courtesy of Josh Willingham and Ryan Doumit. Lord, just after I talked nicely about them yesterday. The Twins used closer Matt Capps in the ninth, and in typical Matt Capps fashion, he allowed an RBI single to Shin-Soo Choo to give Cleveland the 5-4 lead. Chris Perez went 1-2-3 in the ninth, and that was that.

Pitching Line of the Night: Jon Lester threw a complete game for the Red Sox, allowing one run on eight hits, no walks, and six strikeouts. Miguel Batista of the Mets had a solid start against the Brewers, going seven scoreless while allowing four hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. And then, there's Clayton Kershaw doing what he does best: seven scoreless, four hits, three walks, and six strikeouts.

Hitting Line of the Night: Mark Teixeira of the Yankees went 2/4 with three runs, two RBI, a walk, a double, and a homer. Bryan LaHair of the Cubs continued to rake, going 3/4 with two RBI, a walk, and a homer. Dayan Viciedo of the White Sox went 2/4 with four RBI and a homer.

Spotlight Series: no Spotlight Series until Friday, due to each team playing a pair of two game series during the week.

Other Games: The Yankees beat the Orioles 8-5 after five late, unanswered runs. The Cubs rallied late to beat the Cardinals 6-4. The Rays crunched the Blue Jays 7-1. Bryce Harper hit his first career homer as the Nationals beat the Padres 8-5. Lester led the Red Sox to a 6-1 win over the Mariners. The Phillies beat the Astros 5-1. The Royals got a shocking 3-1 win over the Rangers thanks to Bruce Chen. The Reds got two in the eighth to beat the Braves 3-1. The White Sox used an offensive barrage to beat the Tigers 7-5. The Mets stymied the Brewers offense 3-1. The Pirates held on to beat the Marlins 3-2. The Angels got shut out *again*, this time by the A's, 5-0. The Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 3-1 behind Kershaw's great start. The Giants managed to prevail in a 3-2 win over the Rockies.

Today's Games: Stephen Strasburg will start in Washington today against the Padres. Cliff Lee starts for the Phillies today against the Astros. Jake Peavy will go for the White Sox against the Tigers. Johnny Cueto and Tim Hudson is a good-looking matchup in Atlanta. CC Sabathia will take on Wei-Yin Chen in Baltimore. Zack Greinke will start for the Brewers in New York. David Price vs Henderson Alvarez might be the best matchup of the night in Toronto. The struggling Josh Johnson will start for the Marlins against the Pirates. Colby Lewis goes for the Rangers against the Royals. Tim Lincecum goes for the Giants against the Rockies.

Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
