On Monday night, Andy Pettitte set the all-time record for strikeouts by a Yankees pitcher with 1957. The record he broke was held by Whitey Ford, the legendary New York lefty who was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1974. Pettitte's awesomeness is understated at this point in his career though. Keep in mind that Pettitte broke Ford's record in nearly 500 fewer innings. He's also third all-time among Yankees starters in wins with 213 (behind just Ford and Ref Ruffing) and third in WAR (behind Mariano Rivera and Ford). Yeah, Andy Pettitte has had himself a pretty good career, and it seems like people seemingly just forget about him when talking about the best pitchers of the last 20 years. He's not on that Clemens/Martinez/Maddux/Johnson level, but I'd feel comfortable slotting him alongside Glavine and Schilling. PIC OF THE DAY The Arizona Diamondbacks honor the 19 firefighters killed in Yarnell, Arizona on Sunday (Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports) Game of the Night: Mets 5, Diamondbacks 4 (13 innings). Talk about a clinic in overmanaging...the Mets were down 3-0 after six, and rallied to get one run in each of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to tie the game, with the game-tying run in the ninth coming courtesy of a Josh Satin single and Arizona catcher MIguel Montero dropping a perfect throw from Jason Kubel. The game remained scoreless until the 13th (despite the Mets' best efforts), when Cody Ross put Arizona in front with a solo homer. In the bottom of the 13th, Satin doubled with one out, and D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson opted to walk John Buck, the winning win. Pinch hitter Matt Harvey bunted Satin and Buck over, Omar Quintanilla was walked, and Anthony Brown delivered with a single to score Satin and Buck to win the game for New York. Pitching Lines of the Night: Jose Fernandez torched the Padres in a 4-0 Marlins win, allowing two hits in eight shutout innings, walking one and striking out ten. Matt Moore obliterated the Astros in Tampa Bay's 12-0 win, giving up a pair of hits over seven scoreless innings, punching out nine while walking three. Bronson Arroyo beat up the Giants in an 8-1, rain-shortened Reds win, giving up one run on two hits in six innings, walking one and striking out three. RA Dickey pitched the Blue Jays past the Tigers 8-3, giving up two runs on six hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking one. Hitting Lines of the Night: Robinson Cano carried the Yankees to a 10-4 win in Minnesota, going 3/4 with four runs, three RBI, a walk, a double, and two homers. Ryan Roberts supplied Moore with all the offense he needed in Houston, going 3/5 with three runs, three RBI, and two homers. Sean Rodriguez pitched in by going 4/6 with three RBI and two doubles. Omar Infante did well for the Tigers in their loss in Toronto, going 4/4 with two RBI, a double, and a homer. In that rain-shortened game in Cincinnati, Todd Frazier went 2/3 with two runs, four RBI, and a homer. Other Games: Got em all! What You Missed: Our trade deadline primers began with the NL East and AL East. The best and worst players of June. Today's Games: Doug Fister starts for the Tigers in Toronto. Kris Medlen and the Braves host the Marlins. John Lackey and the Red Sox welcome the Padres to Boston. Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals take on the Brewers in DC. Jeff Locke starts for the Pirates in an interstate battle with the Phillies. Tim Lincecum starts for the Giants in Cincinnati against Homer Bailey. Pat Corbin starts for the Diamondbacks at Citi Field. Corey Kluber and Luis Mendoza will duel in Kansas City. David Price makes his return for the Rays in Houston. Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers in Denver against Roy Oswalt. Lance Lynn and Jered Weaver will battle in Anaheim. Scott Feldman starts for the Cubs in Oakland against AJ Griffin. National TV: Giants-Reds (7 PM, MLB Network), Brewers-Nationals (7 PM, MLB Network) MLB.tv Free Game: Diamondbacks-Mets (7 PM) Pitching Matchup of the Day: Lance Lynn vs Jered Weaver (10 PM, Cardinals vs Angels) Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
