Duke Welker is reportedly the PTBNL. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Tom Singer reports that MLB.com sources say Duke Welker is the player to be named later in the Justin Morneau trade. The Pirates sent Alex Presley and a PTBNL to acquire Morneau earlier today. After the trade, Neal Huntington said that the PTBNL would be a “legitimate piece”. Welker is certainly a legitimate piece, as he throws upper 90s with a good breaking ball. However, if your view on relievers is that they’re expendable, he’s not a guy the Pirates will miss. That’s especially true when you consider how good the Pirates have been acquiring right-handed relievers. They traded Vic Black as the PTBNL to acquire Marlon Byrd. If the report is true on Welker, he would have to clear waivers before joining the Twins, thus the reason for the PTBNL status. If he doesn’t clear waivers, the Pirates could pull him back and send him to Minnesota after the season. Welker would have to clear waivers in the NL before he could make it to the Twins in the AL. However, I can’t see anyone blocking the deal, since teams usually have a gentleman’s agreement in place. Welker had a 3.25 ERA in 61 innings with Indianapolis this year, along with a 64:29 K/BB ratio. He made two appearances in the majors, with 1.1 combined shutout innings.

Pirates Notebook: Introducing Justin Morneau

Justin Morneau is here. The first baseman arrived in Pittsburgh at approximately 7:50 last night and made it into the Pirates’ dugout sometime between the fifth and sixth inning. “I knew what the score was. I checked the score when I landed,” Morneau said. “We were listening to it on the radio on the way in.” When he arrived at the moment, Morneau arrived to an image that...

Justin Morneau traded

Well, it happened. The Twins traded longtime first base fixture Justin Morneau to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In return, Minnesota will receive outfielder Alex Presley as well as a player to be named later or cash. From a strictly baseball perspective, this is a trade that makes sense. Morneau is going to be a free agent at the end of the year, and he isn’t going to help the Twins...

Mere days after acquiring Marlon Byrd and John Buck from the Mets, Pittsburgh has acquired Twins first baseman Justin Morneau in exchange for outfielder Alex Presley, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox. Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Game 136

Well hello friends.  It’s been a week since we last did this and let me say, it’s been a big one.  Marlon Byrd, John Buck, and yesterday’s acquisition of Justin Morneau have really changed the look of this team.  The bench is better.  Catching depth is better.  Rightfield is better. If you wanted “all in”…

Twins-Astros Preview

When the Minnesota Twins swept three games from the Houston Astros last month, they had Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau. Neither is available for the Twins this time. Minnesota visits Minute Maid Park for the first time in seven years to start a three-game set Monday that begins with few recognizable players and rookie starters on the mound for these rebuilding teams. Morneau was...

Rangers drop series to Twins

What a downer weekend of baseball. The Rangers scored just seven runs off the Minnesota Twins in three games.  Seven. They scored more than that in three innings of Felix Hernandez pitching. But that’s exactly why I never look at any series as a gimme.  There are no gimmes in baseball.  Every team will have a good stretch and every team will have a bad stretch. The Rangers are...
