Baltimore Orioles general manager Dan Duquette said Sunday the team's signing of outfielder Adam Jones to a long-term deal says how much it is committed to building a winner.

"We're telling Oriole fans we're committed to this player, we're committed to putting a winning team on the field and we're committing to providing hope to rebuilding our fan base," said Duquette during the press conference to announce Jones' contract.

Jones signed a six-year, $85 million contract extension that will keep him in Baltimore through 2018. Duquette said the deal includes a no-trade clause.

The Orioles are off to their best start in more than a decade. They are 29-18, which is tied with Texas for the best record in the American League. They have not had a winning record since 1997 and they have failed to win at least 70 games for the past five seasons.

Jones, who is hitting .307 with 14 home runs and 31 RBIs this season, was just as elated about the announcement.

"I'm here for six more years, and I couldn't be happier," Jones said. "There's a bigger goal here, and that's winning games. And that's the ultimate reason why I signed on. I believe in what Showalter and Duquette believe in, and they believe in winning."
