According to a report by Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald, the Boston Red Sox will placed second baseman Dustin Pedroia on the disabled list Friday. Tests on his injured thumb revealed a new injury to his already ailing thumb, forcing the former AL MVP to the DL.

The Red Sox training staff determined earlier this season that Pedroia would not likely aggravate his torn adductor muscle in his thumb by playing through the injury. According to Lauber, the recent injury to his thumb is on the back side of his hand and not related to his previous injury.
