When Edwin Jackson agreed to sign a one-year, $11 million deal with the Washington Nationals last week, it had been reported that the 28-year-old hurler had turned down several more lucrative offers in favor of pitching for Washington. Today, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal shed some light on one of the deals Jackson turned up to join the Nats.

While Jackson did in fact choose a one year deal in order to raise his free-agent value for next year's hot stove, you could also argue that this is the first player ever to choose to sign with the Nationals over another team because Washington has a better chance of competing. The Pirates may set a low bar to hurdle, but that fact alone speaks volumes to how far this team has come in just one year.

The best part of the whole situation for the Nationals is that the one-year deal puts the onus on Jackson to perform in 2012. He chose the one year deal in order to showcase his talents, and he chose Washington to be the platform for which to gain national attention. As a result, Jackson has not just his $11 million deal to live up to, but a potential multi-year, much larger deal down the road to perform for.

Here are two projections via Fangraphs:

Bill James: 11-12, 4.24 ERA, 206 IP, 6.68 K/9, 4.03 FIP
RotoChamp: 12-10, 3.79 ERA, 190 IP, 6.92 K/9, 3.82 FIP
