The Sox need a "larger-than-lifer". What I mean is-they need a man who can carry not only the team to a championship, but also inspire teammates to do so. The word "superstar" has been used so much that it no longer means a lot. "Larger than lifer" can probably be defined by who is one and who is not one. Ted Williams was one. Yaz was one. Pedro was one. Luis Tiant was one. Manny Ramirez was not one. For a time in the early 00's, Big Papi was one. An "ltl", as I will abbreviate it, is capable of taking over a title run, as Yaz did in 1967. He also must be one over several years. Some Sox examples- Yaz going 7 for 8 with 6 rbi's in the final two games of the 67 race. Tiant throwing over 160 pitches to win the fourth game of the 75 World Series. Pedro throwing six no-hit innings to wrap up the 1999 Divisional Series. Nomar hitting two grand slam homers in a game. Some Sox examples-Yaz going 7 for 8 with 6 rbi's in the final two games...

5th starter still undecided

While the odds on favorite to be named the Red Sox 5th starter to open the season is Felix Doubront (mostly due to his lack of options), Sox assistant GM Mike Hazen wants you to know that the race is "far from over".  Scott Lauber from the Herald has the info: For now, though, Daniel Bard has the No. 4 starter job in a vice grip. His reliever-to-starter transition is...

Adrian Gonzalez Not Fond of Possibly Dabbling in Outfield, But Will Accept Role If Necessary

TAMPA, Fla. –– Adrian Gonzalez is a three-time Gold Glove Award winner as a first baseman. Although he's still penciled in to patrol that position this season, Gonzalez isn't exactly thrilled with Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine's potential plan of slotting him into the outfield this spring. "I told Bobby I'm not an outfielder," Gonzalez said Monday...

Doubront shines in bid for 5th starter spot

After a somewhat shaky first outing in which he gave up two runs over innnings, while surrenedering three hits and walking three, Felix Doubront went out and and absolutely shoved against the Yankees last night. Going four scoreless innings, striking out three. The Yankees forced Doubront to go deep in to counts in order to get a better gauge of the young lefty. Felix ended up throwing...

Red Sox Spring Training News & Notes - 3/13

It was an interesting day yesterday with the Miami Marlins and Boston Red Sox at JetBlue Park. Josh Beckett struggled with his control early on only to turn in a nice performance on the mound. Andrew Bailey's command wasn't all there in his first spring training game. Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen got ejected. And finally, Pedro Ciriaco hit a two-run walk-off home run...

Cubs Send Aaron Kurcz to Red Sox to Still Not Complete Theo Compensation

Back when Chris Carpenter was announced as being sent over to the Boston Red Sox for Theo Epstein, I mentioned that the deal still can't properly be evaluated because there were still 2 players to be named later involved. There was some talk that it was just a logistic move, that the Red Sox had to send a player  to the Cubs besides an executive and the two players would be...

Red Sox 1, Yankees 0

Bobby Valentine smiled his big, wide smile, surrounded by media, talking about the Red Sox and the Yankees. Baseball's hottest rivalry gets a new provocateur this year. ''The intensity will be interesting. Looking forward to it? Who knows?'' he said. Valentine stood in the third base dugout at Steinbrenner Field before his Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees...

NESN Photochop: Who Else Will Bobby Valentine Attempt to Shake Hands With?

Bobby Valentine seems by all accounts to be a friendly guy, which should come as no surprise to those who watched him on ESPN last year. Now, as the Red Sox manager, he's still that same friendly guy, only now he's out there in the dugout, not the broadcast booth shaking plenty of hands and congratulating players. After Tuesday night's game against the Yankees, Valentine...

MLB 2012 Preview: Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are so renowned for their losing ways that were they to miraculously change their ways, the city of Chicago may very well disintegrate before our eyes. That is what they are hoping for with the hiring of former Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and former San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer. Like he did in Boston, Epstein is trying to bring about...
