Found April 28, 2010 on BoSox Injection:

After signing late in Spring Training, Alan Embree has resurfaced in the majors for the Red Sox. After calling up Fabio Castro on Monday, the Red Sox made the move to send him back down and bring up the veteran lefty. With another roster move looming on Saturday, it appears the Sox plan to keep Embree in the majors for a while, assuming he pitches well, which is always a question. The Red Sox maintain 3 lefties in the ‘pen by swapping Castro for Embree, which makes it likely one of the 3 will no longer be on the roster after this weekend.

Embree’s career has been spent bouncing from team to team, never staying anywhere for more than 3 years in a row during his 16 year career in the majors. Embree has a career ERA of 4.59 and has amassed 25 saves in 55 opportunities with a 39-45 overall record. Embree has allowed a career opponent batting average of .254 and will most likely be used as a lefty match-up specialist in the middle-to-late innings in his 2nd stint with the Sox. Only time will tell for sure, but I’m unsure if Embree adds any additional value to the current ‘pen.

Because Embree was not on the 40-man roster, there will have to be a move to make room for him. That may mean Fabio Castro being dropped off the 40-man roster as well, but nothing has been announced as of yet. Embree is expected to be with the Sox tonight in Toronto.
