Eric Chavez Has Struggled Since Coming Off The DL

I was reading a good piece by Mike Vorkunov of the Newark Star-Ledger this morning about Eric Chavez and the pressure he was under in Oakland and how he is so relieved with his change of scenery. However, it got me to thinking about Chavez and how he hasn’t really stood out since coming off the DL so I decided to take a look at his stats since and it isn’t exactly pretty. In 18 games, 16 starts, since returning from the DL, Chavez has hit his first home run as a Yankee, but he has also put up a weak .290 OBP with a disappointing .613 OPS. He is also trending down as since August 7 he has just a .222 OBP and a .434 OPS. No wonder the Yankees put in a claim for Carlos Pena, they have a DH who can’t hit. Once Alex Rodriguez comes back and actually starts playing everyday Chavez should see some extra time on the bench.
