Last month, in the first episode of my new podcast, I said the following about Eric Chavez:"...I think if he doesn't get hurt it's a successful year."Well, that didn't take long. As you probably know, Eric Chavez left last night's game in the middle of his at-bat in the bottom of the 5th inning, complaining of dizziness. We later learned that he'd suffered whiplash, probably while diving for a ball off the bat of the Orioles' JJ Hardy. Chavez might have a concussion, and the Yankees might be making a roster move in the immediate future.Whiplash diving for a batted ball? I'm shaking my head, but not as much as I was last season when Chavez hurt himself running the bases in Detroit. What is Chavez made of? When I was in high school my shop teacher asked a student who was blocking his view if her father was a glazier.  Chavez's father must be a maker of fine china, because that's what his son acts like: A china doll.Maybe Eric Chavez needs ...

Yankees' Chavez suffers whiplash injury

Eric Chavez left the New York Yankees' game against the Baltimore Orioles during his at-bat in the fifth inning because of a whiplash injury and possible concussion. The Yankees say the oft-injured third baseman sustained the injury in the top of the fifth Wednesday night while diving for J.J. Hardy's double down the line. Still, Chavez tried to bat in the bottom half....

Pettitte likely one start from return to Yankees

In what very well may be his final tune up start before joining the Yankees in the Bronx, Andy Pettitte is scheduled to pitch this Sunday for the Triple-A Empire State Yankees. Pettitte threw 96 pitches in his last start, an extended spring training game on Monday, and declared that he was ready for the big leagues following the start. “I feel I’m strong enough and ready...

Reports: Rivera carted off with injury

Mariano Rivera was carted off the field with an apparent knee injury during batting practice before Thursday's game between the Yankees and Royals in Kansas City, according to news reports. Rivera, baseball's career saves leader, apparently injured himself shagging fly balls in the outfield, but was smiling as he was carted off, according to a report by The (N.J.) Star-Ledger...

Yanks' Rivera says he will pitch in 2013

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera emphatically stated Friday that a torn ACL in his right knee will not spell the end of his Hall of Fame career. "I'm coming back. Write it down in big letters. I'm not going out like this," Rivera told reporters Friday in Kansas City. The 42-year-old all-time saves leader hinted before the season that 2012 would be his final campaign...

Mariano Rivera injures knee shagging fly balls, carted off during batting practice

From this point forward, perhaps shagging fly balls in the outfield before a game should only be mandatory for pitchers who are under the age of 42. Maybe it isn’t exactly mandatory, but tracking down balls is something some of the Yankees players like to do to warm up and stay in shape. Yankees fans are now crossing their fingers the injury Mariano Rivera suffered while taking...

Mariano Rivera announces plans to return from injury in most badass way possible

Mariano Rivera tore his ACL when he fell while chasing a fly ball during batting practice prior to the Yankees-Royals game on Thursday. When we learned about the severity of the season-ending injury, LBS writer Steve DelVecchio speculated that it could also be career-ending. After all, consider that Rivera, 42, cryptically hinted in February that this would be his last season. On...

Mariano Rivera Suffers “Right Knee Sprain” Shagging Jason Nix’s Balls

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was carted off the field today, after he injured his right knee chasing down fly balls during BP at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium. Apparently, Rivera does this every single day, and according the The Herald’s Steve Buckley, he nags manager Joe Girardi on a regular basis about letting him get some playing time in the outfield. This is rich people...

Mariano injury worse than cruelest joke

KANSAS CITY You're joking, right? This wasn't in the script. The script says Mariano Rivera walks away when he's good and ready, and not a minute sooner. And he doesn't walk, either. He sprints like a jackrabbit in spring and leaps straight into the arms of his teammates, who collectively hoist him onto their shoulders one last time. He's waving his cap in the...

Mariano Rivera Can’t Go Out Like This

Love or hate the New York Yankees, you have to admit that Mariano Rivera is the greatest closer of all-time. Rivera, 42, was already putting together what could have been a swan song season to close out his career, as he’s recorded 5 saves in 6 chances, with a 1-1 record and 2.16 ERA. Instead, he could be going out more like a dying duck, as he’ll miss the rest of the season...

Should Mariano Rivera Retire After Torn ACL? (Video)

Mariano Rivera tore his ACL last night in warmups trying to shag a fly ball.  The question on everyone's mind is should he retire?  This has to be a sign right?  I mean he has shagged balls his whole career and he goes down with a torn ACL in his 17th season.  The man is 42 years old and his team finally has a chance to be knocked out of the playoffs after it seems like...

Andy Pettitte Testifies That He May Have Misunderstood Roger Clemens' Comments on HGH

WASHINGTON -- With two short answers, Andy Pettitte called into question the validity of his testimony against Roger Clemens, part of a discouraging day for prosecutors in the retrial of the seven-time Cy Young Award winner. After stumbling its way to a mistrial of Clemens last year, the government is struggling again in the retrial -- to the point that the crux of Pettitte's...

Mariano Rivera likely out for the season with torn ACL

The all-time saves leader, Mariano Rivera, suffered a torn ACL yesterday while shagging fly balls at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City and according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com it is still unknown if he'll ever pitch again. “At this point, I don't know,” Rivera said, repeating softly (via Hoch), “At this point, I don’t know. I have to face this first.” According to Hoch...

Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens – Paris and Nicole for a New Generation

On Tuesday, Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens sat 20 feet apart, something that probably hasn’t happened since “Cotton Eye Joe” was a staple at Yankee Stadium. Pettitte was on the witness stand. Clemens was at the defense table. Eye contact was nowhere to be found. What was the topic du jour? A remark about human growth hormone Pettitte recalled hearing from his longtime teammate...

Yankees sign Cuban outfielder Adonis Garcia for $400K

According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, the New York Yankees have signed Cuban outfielder Adonis Garcia for $400,000. The 26-year old Garcia played in the Venezuelan Winter League this year and hit .270/.313/.461 in 152 AB's. To read a scouting report I wrote about Garcia back in February click here.
