Final: Pirates 4, Royals 2 WP: Erik Bedard (4-6, 3.59 ERA) LP: Luke Hochevar (3-7, 6.57 ERA) SV: Joel Hanrahan (16, 2.74 ERA) The Bucs jumped out to an early lead after drawing first blood in the 1st with an RBI double by Garrett Jones. In the 2nd, they added two more on RBI singles by Clint Barmes and Neil Walker. Barmes’ single scored the speedy Rod Barajas from 2nd base thanks to an unreal slide by the Pirates’ catcher. Bedard would give up two runs in the 3rd inning to allow the Royals to get within one run, but would then settle in and was never in any danger the remainder of his seven-inning outing. The Pirates tacked on a 4th run when Jose Tabata was picked off 1st base with Pedro Alvarez on 2nd. Tabata got himself into a run down, which allowed Alvarez to score easily without the Royals even attempting to get the out at the plate. Jason Grilli and Joel Hanrahan shut down the door as each pitched 1-2-3 innings. All around, it was a very good game. I’m not going to look it up,...

News and notes: Appel, Karstens, Tabata

Some leftovers from yesterday… First round pick Mark Appel had a rough game yesterday in his second postseason start. He allowed 5 earned runs in 4 innings in what ended up being an awful 17-1 loss to Florida State. Appel completely lost his control late in his outing – he walked five (two with the bases loaded), hit two batters, and threw a wild pitch. His college season will...

Karstens' new injury could pave way for Owens to crack Pirates' rotation

Even if the Pirates' superb pitching begins to sputter -- and it surely didn't through the 5-4 victory Thursday night in Cincinnati -- they have no shortage of solutions. Yes, even with Jeff Karstens getting reinjured in a rehabilitation start Thursday night. Prospect Rudy Owens, a 24-year-old lefty, is banging down the door at Triple-A Indianapolis with a 4-2 record...

Game 56 Live Chat: Pirates vs Reds

Battlin’ Bucs best Reds

Every win is enjoyable, but this one really meant a lot for the Pirates. It was a back-and-forth contest on the road with the division leader, and they ended up pulling it off in improbable fashion to win the series (their fourth in a row) and complete a winning road trip.  Awesome. For some reason, all the Pirates wins on this road trip started off pretty poorly. This game was...
