It has been a nice couple of weeks for Justin Upton. After placing fourth in the NL MVP voting a few weeks back, ESPN beat writer Keith Law named the Diamondbacks outfielder as baseball’s top player under the age of 25 in an insider article that was posted on Thursday. Here is a brief portion of what Law said about Upton. Upton was an MVP candidate for most of the season until Matt Kemp pulled away in September (and the voters went all retro by deciding the MVP had to be on a playoff team, d’oh). He still has a significant amount of upside left as he continues to get stronger and to refine his approach at the plate. His walk rate slipped in 2011, but he dramatically increased his contact rate, and traded some ground balls (and double plays) for fly balls (and doubles and homers). He’s a five-tool player who would probably play center on some clubs, with several 30-homer seasons ahead of him; a .310/.400/.570 peak isn’t out of the question. This is a pretty ni...

2011 Arizona Diamondbacks Player Evaluations: Stephen Drew

Injuries were story of the 2011 season for Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew. After playing at least 135 games for four straight seasons, Drew came no where close to that mark in 2011. The Diamondbacks shortstop missed the first four games of the season due to abdominal pain that he suffered during spring training. 2011 Arizona Diamondbacks Player Evaluations: Aaron Hill

After the big season that Kelly Johnson had in 2010, no one could have imagined that the Diamondbacks would have someone else manning the second base position at the end of 2011. During 2010, Johnson set career highs in home runs and RBI’s and put together his second best batting average of his career. Then came 2011 where KJ struggled dramatically with the bat. In his second...

D-backs have short shopping list

The winter meetings, major league baseballs version of the preholiday shop-a-thon, begins Monday. You can almost feel Kevin Towers trigger finger twitching. All those general managers. All those agents. All those windows of opportunity. All those possibilities. But unlike last winter, when Towers retooled the Diamondbacks into the NL West champion by adding free agent closer...

Lyle Overbay is still finding work

Lyle Overbay hit a combined .234/.310/.360 with the Pirates and Diamondbacks next year. He only hit nine home runs all year. The Diamondbacks apparently want to bring him back for another year. Of course, the D'Backs will almost certainly finish with a better record than the Pirates in 2012 and the Pirates are playing Clint Barmes more than $10 million over the next two years...

D'Backs Have Made Offer To Lyle Overbay

The Diamondbacks have an offer on the table to veteran first baseman Lyle Overbay, reports Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona (Twitter link).  It is thought to be a one-year contract and the Snakes expect a response from Overbay's representatives early in the Winter Meetings. Overbay was thought to be on Arizona's radar when GM Kevin Towers suggested the team wanted...
