If Evan Longoria isn’t a Tampa Bay Ray for life, it certainly won’t be for a lack of trying. The third baseman agreed to a six-year, $100 million contract extension with the team on Monday, which means that he will be under team control until 2023. The 27-year-old had previously signed a six-year, $17.5 million deal with the team that included team options for the 2014-16 seasons where he would be paid $7.5 million, $11 million and $11.5 million, respectively. With the new deal including an option for the 2023 season, Longoria could be signed with the Rays until he is 38 years old. In 2012, Longoria battled injuries through much of the year and appeared in just 74 games while batting .289 with 17 home runs and 55 runs batted in. The three-time All Star was drafted No. 3 overall by the Rays in the 2006 draft, and it appears he will be spending the entirety of his professional baseball life as a member of the Rays organization.
