Earlier this week, Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Ben Revere made an early entry into the “Catch of the Year” debate with his magnificent effort at tracking down and catching what appeared to be a sure-fire hit by Cincinnati Reds third baseman Todd Frazier. On Wednesday, Revere demonstrated how even when he misses catches can be an awe-inspiring spectacle, due to the glorious effort he puts forth on every fielding attempt. Watch as Revere tries valiantly to race down a batted ball from Reds pitcher Mike Leake (who actually had three hits and pitched seven shutout innings in the 11-2 Reds win), but fails in spectacular fashion. Revere, appearing to be setting up somewhat shallow because Leake is, after all, a pitcher, makes a mad dash for the ball, running at full speed toward the center field wall with his back to the infield. Just as he reaches the warning track and with his back still turned, Revere leaps while awkwardly sticking his glove out in a desperate attempt to miraculously wrangle the ball in his mitt. Video is available for perusal at MLB.com, but this GIF adequately illustrates what transpired: It would have been yet another “Catch of the Year” candidate had he made the catch, but he did not. And yet, it remained a great effort, although awkward and ultimately ineffective. See? Even when Revere doesn’t make the spectacular play he makes it spectacular.
