Recent reports are stating that the San Diego Padres will renew contract negotiations with Cameron Maybin in January (h/t: Chicken Friars). This is good news. As we’ve discussed lately, the Padres have generally avoided locking up their young players to team-friendly, long-term contracts. Obviously signing a young player to a long-term deal involves some risk from the organization’s side, but the reward is having a productive player under contract for far below market value. In his first season in San Diego, 24-year-old Cameron Maybin hit .264/.323/.393 in 569 plate appearances, patrolling center field in Petco Park. Maybin’s game offers speed (40 for 48 on stolen bases), defense (+9.5 UZR, +12 DRS), and a promising bat (it was above-average in 2011) in an exciting combination. Depending on your source, Maybin was worth anywhere from 2.9 WAR to 4.7 WAR in 2011, with the difference due to both offensive and defensive value. Either way, Maybin was very good in 2011, and he’s just en...

Am I crazy about a potential Cameron Maybin extension?

Yesterday I wrote about the prospect of the San Diego Padres extending center fielder Cameron Maybin to a long-term deal. I estimated that a six-year, $40 million deal (plus an option) would be fair to both Maybin and the Padres, giving the center fielder financial security for life and the Padres a chance to maximize surplus value. The proposed six-year deal would buyout Maybin’s...

Padres Interviews: Brad Brach

Selected in the 42nd round of the 2008 draft, Brad Brach was not on the radar of many Padres fans.  Brach was a starting pitcher at Monmouth University and even though he finished his college career as the school leader in wins and stikeouts, the 42nd round pick was not highly decorated.  The Padres moved Brach to the bullpen and he has not looked back.  With an amazing stickout...

Padres endure year of challenge, change - Padres.com "It was a year of change for the Padres in 2011, as after winning 90 games in 2010 the club slipped to last place in the National League West, struggling to score runs without All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez while also failing to replicate any of the mojo they had the previous season."   Could John Moores...

2011 is coming to an end, which means 2012 is right around the corner and we are inching closer to opening day. I believe we are now under 100 days left until then! We're almost there friar faithful. Also I am excited because January is almost here and historically January has been a busy month for the Padres. So it remains to be seen what will happen, but it should be fun...

Top 50 Prospects: #19 – Anthony Rizzo

#19 Anthony Rizzo San Diego Padres DOB: 8/8/1989 Previous Rank: N/R ETA: 2012 It is hard to still think of Rizzo as a rookie after he was punished to the tune of a .523 OPS for the Padres in 128 at-bats in 2011.  He still qualifies for this list, though, and while his stock did take a hit, he still is one of the top corner bat prospects in the game.  As soon as he was demoted to...

Andrew Bailey was traded yesterday from the A's to the Red Sox. Interesting to think about becauase the Padres were once linked to Baily right before the winter meetings. At that point the Padres went a different direction and traded for Huston Street instead. Chicken Friars has an analysis of it all which is below. Also our own Steve Adler will guest host on Josh and Charod...

Daily Friar 12.26.11

I hope that all of you had a wonderful Christmas yesterday and are enjoying time with family and friends. It's kind of ironic to me that the time that we start to get more hectic around the household, the baseball world takes a break. I'm sure there are discussions of stuff going on behind closed doors, but the activity that we have been hearing about has put on the breaks...
