Sounding more like a whiner than a professional baseball hitter, Giants utility man Mark DeRosa told San Jose Mercury writer Andrew Baggarly last night that the organization needs to move the fences in. Not only that, he said San Francisco should put a city tree behind the centerfield fence.
His exact quote was:
Without a doubt. Maybe you don’t move the fences in. But I think you saw maybe two balls go out to right-center this year. So they definitely should cut the corner. Have another wall go across. Maybe put something nice back there. I don’t know. Does San Francisco have a city tree?
Since when did you become a stadium architect, Mark?
Here’s an idea. Why don’t you take your thrice-surgically-repaired wrists on out of the Bay Area and leave the real decisions to the people who write your overpaid pay checks every week? I’m sure Eric Byrnes‘ old beer-league softball team has an open roster spot. And the fences there are only 250 feet or so.

Seriously, Mark? You think the Giants are going to make their superior pitching staff weaker so guys like you can maybe pop one out once in awhile?
I can hear it now…..
“Hey Timmy, Matt, Vogey and MadBum, can you guys come into my office? Zeets, go ahead and wait in the hall.”
“What is it, Skip?”
“Well, I was just talking to DeRo and he said we should move the fences in so him and some of the other guys can help you guys out with some run support.”
“But won’t that help the opposing players too, Boch?”
“Hmmmm. Good point, Timmy.”
“I’ve got a better idea, Skip.”
“What is it, Matty?”
“Instead of moving the fences in, why don’t we just move Mark out?”
“Now we’re talking…Send DeRo in, boys. Oh, and Barry, too.”
