Welcome back to the Waiver Wire Watch. Now that the trade deadline has come and gone, it’s time to bear down for the stretch of the fantasy baseball season. Here are some more under-the-radar players that are worth taking a look at.

Format for waiver wire watch:

  • 50-75% Owned- Player qualifies for 10-team league
  • 25-49% Owned- Player qualifies for 12-team league
  • Less than 25% Owned- Player qualifies for 14-team league

Again, these percentages are found on Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball.

10-team league hitter to watch

Dexter Fowler, OF, COL

Dexter Fowler is having a really good season, and a lot of people have yet to take notice. He has a solid AVG of .295, and he has an extremely impressive OBP (.381) and SLG (.511). The .381 OBP also puts him among the top 10 outfielders in that category.

Fowler also leads the majors with 10 triples on the season. Throw in the fact that he can hit a few homers and steal a few bases as well, and you have a pretty dynamic player that is still available in a lot of fantasy leagues.

10-team league pitcher to watch

Wandy Rodriguez, SP, PIT

Wandy Rodriguez has been one of the more consistent left-handed pitchers for a number of years now, though he has yet to gain the attention he deserves. A recent trade of Rodriguez from Houston to Pittsburgh could be beneficial for fantasy owners, as he has better odds of getting wins.

He has pitched more than 190 innings in each of the past three seasons, while posting an ERA of well under 4.00 during that time. Rodriguez is on pace to meet those numbers again with the potential of a few more wins now that he is out of Houston.

12-team league hitter to watch

Justin Morneau, 1B, MIN

As proven by his numbers in July, former AL MVP Justin Morneau still has something left in the tank. Morneau is batting .317 for the month with 3 HR and 12 RBI. His .364 OBP and 13 runs scored in July are by far bests for Morneau for a month this season as well. He also still hits right-handed pitching well, with an AVG of .311 against righties. He may not be the dangerous power hitter that he once was, but he has proven that he is still capable of producing.

12-team league pitcher to watch

Chad Billingsley, SP, LAD

Chad Billingsley is putting up an impressive July for the Dodgers. His overall numbers for the season aren’t bad either. So far in July, he has an ERA of 2.84 and a WHIP of 1.03. Overall on the season, Billingsley has a respectable ERA of 3.89 and has 106 Ks in 118 IP.

He is pretty much having another typical Chad Billingsley-type season. He won’t contend for the Cy Young Award, but you can expect him to log quality innings and strikeout a decent amount of batters along the way.

14-team league hitter to watch

Ryan Ludwick, OF, CIN

I am extremely surprised more fantasy teams have not taken a flyer on Ryan Ludwick. In just 78 games this season, Ludwick has belted 17 HR and has a .527 SLG to go along with that. These are the numbers for a guy that is owned in only 10% of all fantasy leagues. Ludwick has always been able to hit the long ball, and playing at hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark only helps his case. He is almost a free source of power in most fantasy leagues, so why not take a chance on him?

14-team league pitcher to watch

Lucas Harrell, SP, HOU

Lucas Harrell has virtually come out of nowhere to produce a string of impressive starts for the Astros and make himself a viable fantasy option. In his last 4 starts, Harrell has allowed a total of 5 ER. Also, since June 22 Harrell has allowed more than two runs in a game only twice. In July, his ERA for the month is 3.03, and he has 30 Ks in 29.2 IP. Thus, Harrell is showing he has the ability to strike out batters. With the consistency he has put together recently, he’s definitely someone to put on your watch list.
