Everyone was caught off guard when the Orioles called up Manny Machado. Now the rumors are swirling that the Texas Rangers will call up über prospect Jurickson Profar. Prospect watch: Jurickson Profar could be Rangers’ next call-up bit.ly/Nypbon — Sporting News (@sportingnews) August 14, 2012   Mike Olt has primarily sat on the bench for the Rangers so a Profar call up would certainly be surprising. Let’s also mention that the call up of Manny Machado by the Orioles was a huge risk, considering that in the last 15 years only 6 players had fewer minor league at bats than Machado when he got the call. Profar wouldn’t have the minor league experience, plus he’d sit on the bench for the Rangers (because, you know, it’s preferable to have Michael Young be mediocre at a multitude of positions than to actually bench him), but Profar is too talented to ignore if by some wild chance he’s in the majors soon. The one thing that does point to his call is the trend for teams ...

MLB ready for next "can't miss" rookie?

You might be thinking to yourself that the name "Jurickson Profar" rings a bell. It should. Last month, during the lead up to the MLB trade deadline, the Texas Rangers were looking at a number of candidates to strengthen their team for another World Series push. But Texas held up from making any blockbuster deals because the player ever team wanted in return from the...

Two Hamilton home runs aren’t enough

For the second night in a row, Rangers pitchers did their job while the offense floundered.  It’s so frustrating to watch this team.  I know they’re leading the AL West and have the second best record in the AL.  They still look good enough to make October, but if they keep playing like this, they won’t make it through October. Rangers fans were pretty stoked this afternoon...

Q&A: David Murphy, Underrated Ranger

David Murphy isn’t a star. The former first-round draft pick — 17th overall by the Red Sox in 2003 — has never been able to establish himself as more than a solid player. Coming into the season, his high-water marks included an .806 OPS and 2 WAR. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t getting better. Murphy now is having a career year in Texas. Entrenched as an everyday cog in...

Rangers avoid a sweep in New York

Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz were on the bench. Michael Young was at second base. Mike Olt was in right field. Weird lineup, right?  Well, it kind of worked.   Well played, Ron Washington. Or something like that. I’d like to say the defensive replacements didn’t hurt us.  But … well … Mike Olt dropped a fly ball in the 6th that would have been the final out.  And Michael...

Rangers top Yankees, avoid sweep

These romps around the bases fit the Texas Rangers just fine. Craig Gentry turned a spot start into a tiebreaking hit and the Rangers avoided a four-game sweep in a matchup of AL division leaders, rallying past the New York Yankees 10-6 Thursday. Texas had lost eight straight at Yankee Stadium overall. The high-scoring Rangers had done little in this series, too, totaling only...

Ryan Dempster’s Early AL Struggles

Ryan Dempster’s performance last night against the New York Yankees only fueled the argument for fans doubting that he can be a dominant pitcher in the American League.  Dempster gave up nine hits and eight runs (two homers) in six innings of work last night in the Bronx. Dempster was acquired by the Texas Rangers on July 31st with only minutes remaining before MLB’s trade deadline...

Rangers 10, Yankees 6

Craig Gentry turned a spot start into a tiebreaking hit and the Texas Rangers avoided a four-game sweep in a matchup of AL division leaders, rallying past the New York Yankees 10-6 Thursday. Texas had lost eight straight at Yankee Stadium overall. The hard-hitting Rangers had done little in this series, too, totaling only four runs before the finale. Gentry started for the first...

VIDEO: Andruw Jones loses Josh Hamilton fly ball in sun, nearly gets smashed

Your browser does not support iframes. During Thursday afternoon's Rangers-Yankees game, Josh Hamilton of the Rangers hit a deep fly ball to left field. Yankees left fielder Andruw Jones, a ten-time Gold Glover in center field for the Braves, settled under the ball, but apparently lost it in the sun. Crippled by the sunlight in his eyes, Jones fell onto his butt while...

Rangers salavage a win in series finale against Yankees

NEW YORK -- The Texas Rangers had been humbled in the first three games, the New York Yankees turning the matchup between the American League's top two teams into a Yankee showcase with three straight wins. Now the Rangers had just absorbed another blow in the bottom of the sixth inning of the four-game series finale Thursday, and the fans at Yankee Stadium were roaring yet...

Anthony Rendon: Scouting the Unknown

I was gonna write about Jurickson Profar and his possible call-up here, but Grey ran with that yesterday and my take wasn’t offering different advice.  Add him in keepers if he’s not already owned, but don’t waste much energy on him in re-draft formats as playing time will be spotty and he’s still five-or-so years away from peaking.  Anyway, just one name to dig into this...
