One of the challenges when it comes to ranking players by position in fantasy baseball is trying to determine which player is going to have that breakout season and return a profit to your auction buy or draft pick. When reviewing the list of first basemen for the 2013 season, my pick to break out is Jedd Gyorko of the San Diego Padres. It is cheating a little bit to call for a breakout for a guy that has never played a game before in the major leagues, but based on his average draft position and the ability to put up more stats than his current projections, I think it makes him a good candidate. The issue for him is his defense which we don’t care about in fantasy baseball leagues, but it would be one reason that he might start the year back in Triple-A. The Padres moved him to second base with Chase Headley locked in at third and Gyorko has a lot of work to do with his glove and footwork. What is ready however, is his hitting and the Padres badly need offense. 2013 Fantasy Projection for Jedd Gyorko Just in case the Padres want him to work on his defense some more or delay the start of his service time, they could have Gyork0 start in the minor leagues, hence my 450 at bat projection which is something of a hedge. He has gotten off to a good start so far this spring, hitting .278 in 18 at bats with three home runs and nine RBI to lead the team. If he can get 500 at bats this season, I could see him putting up a stat line similar to Neil Walker of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a few more RBI.
