Mixed-league roto owners, are you looking for a waiver-wire pitcher before Wednesday's slate of games? Here's my free-agent choice (citing most 12-team leagues) for one day of relatively fantasy stardom. Truth be told, though, the crop of free-agent hurlers isn't so plentiful today: Phil Hughes, Yankees (vs. Dodgers) 1. Of his last five outings, Hughes has allowed three or less runs four times. 2. Since April 23, spanning 10 starts, Hughes has registered six-plus strikeouts six times. 3. Hughes has four advantages for Wednesday: a. He's pitching at home; b. The Dodgers don't have Matt Kemp in the lineup (hamstring); c. Hanley Ramirez hasn't batted his weight in six weeks; d. Since this is the Dodgers' first regular-season trip to Yankee Stadium in like forever, the majority of L.A. players have never encountered Hughes. The Next Five For Wednesday 1. Shaun Marcum (Mets) @ Braves Forget about Marcum's 0-8 seasonal record (beer helps), the...

NY Yankees Should Move Phil Hughes to Bullpen

Brad Penner- USA TODAY Sports Phil Hughes has been pretty awful for the New York Yankees. Through the first month of the 2013 season, Hughes looked like a very good pitcher. Though he’d only produced one win, he had just one start in which he gave up more than three earned runs. His HR/9 rate looked as though it might be under control and he had a five start stretch where he...

Welcome Back Don: Yankees vs Dodgers (6/18/13)

Phil Hughes (3-5, 4.89 ERA) and the Yankees are back on the east coast after a long (and disappointing) west coast trip to take on Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-2, 2.85 ERA) and the Dodgers (and Don Mattingly) in the first game of two. Hughes has been hot and cold all year, and his last outing against Oakland would certainly be in the cold category. He threw 95 pitches and lasted just 4 1...

Yankees: Hughes saw the Puig show

I was supposed to see Hiroki Kuroda pitch last night vs. the LA Dodgers, but thanks to Mother Nature I had to endure another Phil Hughes catastrophe. Dodgers Yasiel Puig – 06-20-2013 – Yankee Stadium After Tuesday night’s game got bumped making Wednesday a doubleheader, the older of the two starting pitchers traditionally picks the game he wants to start in. Kuroda picked the...
