After my blog entry saying the Dodgers should part ways with Don Mattingly, the manager and the ballclub got fired up in a tense 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks that included 5 hit batsmen and two bench-clearing brawls. Oh, and Andre Ethier hit a clutch homer, too. (Image source: http://thesuicidesqueeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/dewey-defeats-truman.jpg).rab2{position:absolute;clip:rect(453px,auto,auto,476px);}approval cash advance Okay, not exactly Dewey Defeats Truman, but I do have to wonder if Andre Ethier (big 2 run homer after Puig was plunked) and Don Mattingly had a read of my blog from last night and decided to call shenanigans on me.  Well played, sirs.  Well played.  If the Dodgers build on the momentum of tonight’s win, the veteran right fielder and the skipper just might make me eat my words. A wild one at Chavez Ravine tonight as the Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks found themselves involved in some tit-for-tat hit-by-pitches.  5 batters total were hit in the game.  Two bench-clearing brawls interrupted the contest.  Yasiel Puig got his first major league hit-by-pitch and his first major league ejection. But the story tonight was the Dodgers flat-out out-fighting the Arizona Diamondbacks.  After Yasiel Puig was hit in the head by Ian Kennedy, Andre Ethier hit a two run homer to tie the game at 2 in the Bottom of the 6th. Zack Greinke got payback for Puig, hitting Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero with a fastball in the Top of the 7th, inciting the first brawl. The Dodgers and Diamondbacks weren’t done, however.  Ian Kennedy continued the battle by hitting Greinke in the helmet with a pitch in the Bottom of the 7th, drawing an ejection for Kennedy and Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson and clearing the benches for a second time.  Yasiel Puig also found himself ejected, along with bench coach Mark McGwire. The Diamondbacks pushed across a run on a combination of J.P. Howell and Matt Guerrier in the Top of the 8th, but in the bottom of the 8th, walks by Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier and Juan Uribe loaded the bases for Tim Federowicz. And then this happened….FedEx, bases cleared, guaranteed.  Delivers on-time, even in the clutch.  (Image source: http://thesuicidesqueeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/1671067-inline-1-inline-fedex-plane.jpg) Federowicz’ bases-clearing double off the wall gave the Dodgers a 5-3 lead, and Kenley Jansen’s 1-2-3 ninth, punctuated by 2 strikeouts by the newly re-minted closer, sent the Dodger faithful home happy. For one night, the Dodgers showed what they have to get off the matt and fight back.  Ethier did it.  Mattingly did it.  The team as a whole did it.  The question is now, can the team as a whole sustain this effort from this point out?  Or will what appears to be a possible turning point game for the franchise fall short once again? We may get a sense tomorrow night in the rubber game.  First pitch at 7:10 p.m.  Hyun-Jin Ryu takes on Patrick Corbin. Can the Dodgers pull a Rocky and get off the matt? For one night, it looked like the potential was there… (Image source: http://thesuicidesqueeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/img1rockyw.jpg) Related articles Fire Don Mattingly.
