Cardinals reliever Fernando Salas has returned after a short  stint with Triple AAA Memphis throwing the ball well and  has not allowed a run in his past three appearances. - Photo  courtesy of Getty Images Throughout 2011, St. Louis Cardinals reliever Fernando Salas was among the most reliable bullpen options for then manager Tony La Russa.  After starting the season with Triple AAA Memphis in 2011, Salas became La Russa's "jam" guy after his initial call-up.  Salas then was called on to save 24 games before becoming a reliable option in the bullpen in any situation during the Cardinals playoff run. Unfortunately in 2012, Salas started the year poorly and was highly ineffective.  Salas was so bad that new manager Mike Matheny virtually stopped using him and the club optioned him to Triple AAA Memphis in late May.   Some wondered if Salas may be fatigued after such a large workload in 2011.  Only Jason Motte appeared in more games in 2011 and some analysts saw s...

Coaches excited to rejoin La Russa in dugout

ST. LOUIS Tony La Russa is getting the band back together again. At least for a July night in Kansas City. As the manager of last year's World Series champion Cardinals, the retired La Russa will manage the National League squad in the July 10 All-Star Game at Kauffman Stadium. And Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that La Russa's entire coaching staff from the...

How often did the Cardinals score so few despite so many hits?

It is rough enough that the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the visiting Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night, but seeing the many missed scoring opportunities made it all the worse. The Cardinals offense plated just one run despite rapping out 11 hits. Adam Wainwright pitched well for St. Louis, but took the loss primarily due to the lack of cover from the hitters. (Shane Robinson,...

The Cardinals Second Base Options

The Cardinals have had many problems this season, ranging from bullpen issues to the plethora of injuries. One of the biggest holes is at second base. Coming into the season, this was a known issue, but the team decided to have a competition between former first round pick Tyler Greene and utility man Dan Descalso. Neither player appeased most of the fans (granted, there was the...

Injuries have been too much to overcome

In today's world, most major league teams don't have the depth to withstand a constant rash of injuries, and the Cardinals are finding that out. With seven of their projected 25-man roster on the disabled list, the Cardinals have gone 11-19 in the last month. They have won just two of their last 10 series -- against weaklings San Diego and Houston -- and have dropped to...

Cards grind through illnesses, slump

Right-hander Lance Lynn had a sore back. Right fielder Carlos Beltran was sick. Shortstop Rafael Furcal's bat had been ill, but his glove was fine. Those three, along with stout relief from left-hander Marc Rzepczynski and right-hander Jason Motte, who each induced a double play in the last two innings, brought the Cardinals at least a breath of fresh air from the stagnation...

Lynn wins 10th, Beltran hits 19th HR

Lance Lynn struck out a career-high 12 to stay tied for the major league lead in wins and Carlos Beltran hit his NL-best 19th home run Wednesday night, sending the St. Louis Cardinals to a 1-0 victory over the White Sox that ended Chicago's eight-game road winning streak. Paul Konerko grounded into a game-ending double play with runners on first and third against Jason Motte...

Carlos Beltran will accept Derby invite if asked

Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran said that he would  participate in the Home Run Derby this year if asked. - Photo  courtesy of Getty Images St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran has been better than advertised during his first season in St. Louis.  After signing a two year, $26 million contract last winter to come to St. Louis, the often-injured outfielder has managed...

A tale of two teams

In listening to the post game press conference it is obvious something is off with this team. And Cardinals manager Mike Matheny sees it to. “You could see one team with a lot of confidence and the way they walk onto the field and the way they play the game, and I think you’re seeing a team on the other field that’s not so much,” he said following  the Cardinals’ 6-1 loss...

Cards offense sputters in loss to White Sox

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Despite the loss, the Cardinals were encouraged by Adam Wainwright's performance on Tuesday. Wainwright had another strong outing, as he lasted seven innings and allowed two runs and five hits while striking out seven. But the Cardinals' offense struggled and the Chicago White Sox earned a 6-1 victory. "Adam definitely deserved better than the result...

Lynn continues remarkable season

ST. LOUIS Lance Lynn figured to be a key late-inning reliever for the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals this year. Instead he just might make the All-Star team as a starter. Continuing a remarkable run as a fill-in for the injured Chris Carpenter, Lynn went 7 13 scoreless innings Wednesday night and tied the Mets R.A. Dickey for the National League lead with 10 wins in a dramatic...

Molina and Furcal in tight races for ASG

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has pulled in front of St. Louis Cardinals backstop Yadier Molina in the National League's second balloting figures for the 83rd All-Star Game, to be played on Tuesday, July 10th at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Posey, the 2010 N.L. Rookie of the Year has earned 1,713,839 votes as he aims for his Midsummer Classic debut. Among N.L...
