Throughout 2011, St. Louis Cardinals reliever Fernando Salas was among the most reliable bullpen options for then manager Tony La Russa. After starting the season with Triple AAA Memphis in 2011, Salas became La Russa's "jam" guy after his initial call-up. Salas then was called on to save 24 games before becoming a reliable option in the bullpen in any situation during the Cardinals playoff run.
Unfortunately in 2012, Salas started the year poorly and was highly ineffective. Salas was so bad that new manager Mike Matheny virtually stopped using him and the club optioned him to Triple AAA Memphis in late May.
