A few notes to wrap up the night.

**Starling Marte had a great game tonight. That’s good to see. I pointed out two days ago the mini slump Marte was in. A few weeks ago I pointed out that his hot streak was only an equally long nine games. My point in all of this hasn’t been to say that one stretch is legit, or to make a claim one way or the other that he’s ready/not ready. My point is to give him more time to show which version is the real thing. Is it the ten game stretch where he was on fire at the plate? Or the ten game stretch where he struck out a third of the time?

Marte had an amazing June, hitting for a .325/.385/.558 line. At the start of the month, I said I’d give him another month, and if he continued that hitting, it would look like he was ready. So far he’s hitting better than last month, with a .333/.414/.667 line in July. The “give him another month” was met with “what difference will one month make?” comments. Those assumed that he was ready, and that the extra month was just going through the motions until his call-up. The extra month suggestion was to give him enough time to prove he was ready. And so far he’s proving it.

We could be getting close to #FreeStarlingMarte time.

**Imagine losing Andrew McCutchen for 3-4 weeks in the current NL Central race. That’s basically what happened to the Cincinnati Reds when they lost Joey Votto today. Votto had the second best OPS in the majors this year, behind McCutchen. The Pirates lost tonight, but remain a game behind the Reds after Cincinnati lost. With Votto out, we could see the Reds in the loss column a bit more often over the next 3-4 weeks.

**You know trade season is in full swing when a late scratch sparks trade rumors. Carlos Quentin was scratched from tonight’s game, and immediately the speculation began. It turned out that Quentin was scratched with knee soreness.

Thoughts on Justin Upton and Starling Marte

Over the last week or so and especially this weekend, rumors regarding the Pirates and Arizona’s Justin Upton have been heating up. The Pirates reportedly had a scout in Chicago this week to watch Upton, and ESPN’s Jayson Stark called the Pirates a “serious contender” for the young outfielder. Jon Heyman of CBS, however, reported that there “is nothing serious” between...

First Pitch: Why Starling Marte Might Not Be Ready

It was hard to make the argument a few weeks ago that Starling Marte needed more time. Marte was in the middle of a pretty amazing hot streak. On June 22nd, Marte had a .754 OPS on the year. Over his next nine games he would put up a .450 average and a 1.376 OPS in 40 at-bats. All throughout the hot streak, people were calling for him to be promoted. On June 27th, after Marte went...

Drew Sutton Adding a Spark to the Top of the Lineup

Drew Sutton – Image Credit: Pittsburgh Pirates Since joining Pittsburgh, Drew Sutton has added a spark at the top of the Pirates lineup. The 28-year-old has had some memorable moments so far, too. Between hitting a walkoff home run — his first long ball since August of 2010 and a moment that he said is the reason you play the game — learning to flash the Zoltan “Z” on the...

The Pittsburgh Pirates: a tale of three half seasons

For the second straight season, the Pittsburgh Pirates have come out of the gates from the All-Star break and found themselves in a tie for first place in the NL Central.  For the second straight season, almost nobody believes they are "for real." In fact, I suspect you'd find more people who think that Santa and the Easter Bunny are "for real"...

Minor League Schedule: 7/17/12

Jeff Locke gets the start tonight for Indianapolis. At the All-Star break, Locke, along with Justin Wilson and Rudy Owens, all had 7-4 records. Locke lost his first start after the break, while Wilson got a no-decision and Owens won last night, in each of their first post-AS starts. West Virginia was rained out yesterday. They will play a doubleheader today consisting of 2 seven...

Game 90 Live Chat: Pirates vs Rockies

Weekend of whiffs

The Pirates looked foolish both at the plate and in the field today, as they fell to the Brewers and dropped their first series in a month. Yovani Gallardo absolutely dominated, cooling down the Bucco bats for the first time in a quite a while. He did it by striking out a startling 14 batters in seven innings (the bullpen added three more K’s). It was ugly; the Pirates tied a...

Game 90: Pirates 6 Rockies 2

With the Pirates in need of a strong start to help them break out of a post-All Star break mini-funk, Erik Bedard gave them 6 2/3 innings in thin air of Colorado tonight, which turned out to be plenty good for an offense that finally showed some real life after a strange set of post-ASB games. I'm not sure I'd say Bedard is "back" based on his work tonight (four...

Pirates-Rockies Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates' Andrew McCutchen has been the hottest hitter in baseball over the last month-plus. The All-Star outfielder seems unlikely to cool down with a visit to hitter-friendly Coors Field up next. McCutchen looks to continue his torrid pace as the Pirates and Colorado Rockies open a three-game set Monday night. Batting an MLB-best .458 with 11 homers, 31 RBIs...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies – Game 89
