Gary Carter was taking a beating. In his first game as a New York Met Carter was hit by a pitch twice, he allowed a run to score on a passed ball, the opposing pitcher Joaquin Andujar stole a base against him and Mets broadcaster Ralph Kiner referred to him as Gary Cooper.
