In a development you can read more in an article from Adam Rubin here, on ESPN NewYork.com, it seems as though the Mets have made their decision as to whom their next bench coach will be, and it’s apparently not going to be Jim Riggleman.

Truthfully, although I loved the job Riggleman did in Washington, I really did not respect the way he bowed out of the position.  And although he may have been the most talented choice, I think the Mets did the right thing  in seemingly choosing to go in another direction.  So what direction did they decide to go in?  How about a familiar direction for some.

Bob Geren was the manager of the Oakland A’s from 2007 before he was fired this past season, managing to a record of just slightly under .500.  What does this mean for the Mets?  Not all that much, in my opinion, although I have read many times that the bench coach role in New York is more important than it is in other markets based solely on the media demands of the manager himself.  So, while I am happy that the Mets seemed to have gone with managerial experience, part of me is still waiting for the Wally Backman era to begin.  And despite the rumors that the Mets may lose Backman, I just don’t know how an organization that needs fan support such as the Mets do would be so willing to lose the only real future managerial candidate that might actually spark the fan base.  While I’m sure Backman was never truly considered for the position, it seemed to me to be the best, and most obvious, public relations move the team could make.  Hopefully the team was more concerned with winning than public relations, and in that regard, I do hope Geren was the right choice.

Instead, the Metsecutives decided to go in a similar direction…for them.

And the Mets transition into becoming the Oakland A’s with a bigger budget continues.  I only hope all this Oakland consideration will translate into success similar to that Oakland enjoyed from 2000-2006, and not the sub-par performances they’ve had since…
