Josh Hamilton tied the major league record for homers in a game Tuesday.

Of course, you know what happened next.

Time to talk about his pending free agency.

Hamilton, who went 5-for-5 Tuesday with four homers, eight RBI and 18 total bases, said Wednesday that free agency isn't driving his amazing start. The Texas Rangers outfielder begins Thursday's doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles leading the major leagues in all three Triple Crown categories with a .406 average, 14 homers and 36 RBI.

He is the fourth player in history to have at least 16 homers and 36 RBI in his team's first 30 games. Philadelphia's Cy Williams (1923), Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez have all done it.

All that is likely to increase Hamilton's negotiating leverage, not that he's worrying about it. Hamilton said that he's not used his uncertain contract status as motivation for his monster start to the season.

Hamilton's agent, Mike Moye, remains in contact with the Rangers, but general manager Jon Daniels said there is nothing really new to report on the contract talks.

"I've been completely able to block it out," Hamilton said. "It's out of my hands. If I end up with Texas, great; I'll be happy to be here. If not, I'll be happy to go wherever God sends us.

"It's easy for me to focus on exactly what is in front of me. Every day I think how can I be the best that I can be that night. I don't have time to think about all the other stuff."

Hamilton, who turns 31 on May 21, and the Rangers have had only the most informal conversations since his late-winter setback in his battle for sobriety.
