Found November 07, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
Matt Harvey is vacationing in Russia with his supermodel girlfriend Anne V who posted a picture of themselves on Instagram. I couldn’t help laughing a little at the picture which reminded me of the James Bond movie I mentioned in the title. In that blockbuster, Sean Connery trekked through Russia with his own supermodel girlfriend, Daniel Bianchi, as well. Looks to me like life is treating our ace pretty good… Hat tip to Eileen…

Mets Close To Re-Signing LaTroy Hawkins

Kristie Ackert of the Daily News is reporting that LaTroy Hawkins, undoubtedly one of the best free agent signings of the 2013 season for the Mets, is very close to re-signing with the team. Hawkins emerged as one of the most reliable relievers in the Mets’ bullpen and eventually took over as the team’s closer once Bobby Parnell was lost for the season. A source close to the...

Mets Could Deal D’Arnaud For A Big Bat

The Mets could trade catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud to try and acquire a big bat according to Andy Martino of the Daily News. Some Mets people are really high on catching prospect Kevin Plawecki, writes Martino, and this pretty much sums up what I’ve been saying for a while now. The question now is if teams will look down on d’Arnaud who didn’t exactly hit the ground...

Mets Card of the Week: 1964 Duke Snider

I picked up this 1964 Challenge the Yankees Duke Snider card last week. He is the only New York Met in the fifty card set. The cards were part of the boxed dice game issued by the Hassenfeld Brothers out of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. They marketed and distributed the game in 1964 and again in 1965 with a slightly different group of players (including no Snider and no other Met...

Johan Santana likely a late-winter signing

Free-agent Johan Santana likely will wait until deep into the offseason to sign, when he is most equipped to demonstrate to bidders he is ready to compete from the get-go in 2014. Santana underwent April 2 surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder. It marked the second time he underwent that procedure. Santana became a free agent when the Mets declined a $25...

Is Mike Pelfrey Returning To The Mets A Good Idea?

Could the New York Mets’ desperate need for starting pitching lead them back to Mike Pelfrey? Seriously. Should GM Sandy Alderson decided there’s not much in the free-agent market, and with the Twins moving faster than the Mets regarding Bronson Arroyo, there are probably worse ideas than re-signing Pelfrey. Pelfrey, released by the Twins, made $4 million last year, so whatever...

Why The Mets Won’t Invest $100 Million On Any Player…

Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog weighed in on the $100 million dollar player issue and explains why the Mets won’t go there. There are revenue reasons, I’m sure, no question. But, also, regardless of budget size and your team’s financial situation, I just don’t think Sandy Alderson believes in those sort of commitments when building a baseball team. What’s more, thanks to some...

What will it take to land Jurickson Profar?

The main priority for the Mets this offseason is to land a few bats that can help generate more runs for a lackluster offense.  David Wright needs protection in the lineup, and acquiring an outfielder or two to fill the needs might suffice.  Shortstop has also emerged as an unknown position for next year, at least from a fan’s perspective.  Ruben Tejada’s stronghold of the...

Rockies Sign Reliever Greg Burke To Minor League Deal

Greg Burke has signed a minor league deal with the Colorado Rockies according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New YorkThe righthanded side-armer posted a 5.68 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 31.2 innings pitched with the Mets last season.I prayed for another team to sign him yesterday and it actually happened…  :-) Original Post Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports that 17 Mets minor leaguers are...

Grady Sizemore Is Still Out There – A Risk The Mets Should Take?

I wrote a piece last October questioning whether the Mets should take a shot on Grady Sizemore. He should be fully recovered from knee injuries now, and could be signed on a minor league deal. So why not take a shot? I’m not talking about making Sizemore the main signing this off-season, I’m talking about taking a shot on a player that could be had relatively cheap, and potentially...

Mets Arbitration Predictions and Non-Tender Candidates

MLB Trade Rumors posted their arbitration predictions today. Daniel Murphy stands to be the biggest winner nearly doubling his 2013 salary to $5.8 million dollars. Guaranteed Contracts David Wright – $11.0 million (2013), $20.0 million Jon Niese – $3.0 million (2013), $5.05 million Arbitration 1 Dillon Gee – $527,375 (2013) $3.4 million Ruben Tejada – $514,701 (2013), $1...

Putting The Cart Before The Horse…

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of hearing that the Mets will have $30-40 million to spend this offseason… Especially when neither the owner or general manager have said anything close to that. For a fan base that is so desperate to hear those words, and a franchise that desperately wants to shed their “Team is Broke” image, don’t you think they’d be...

Mets Have Interest In First Baseman Corey Hart

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that free agent first baseman Corey Hart is drawing interest from over a dozen teams including the Mets. Hart, 31,  missed the entire 2013 season with multiple knee surgeries, but over his previous three seasons the righthanded slugger has hit .280 with an .857 OPS and has averaged 30 homers. During that span he’s produced a 9.5 bWAR and...

Greg Burke headed to Rockies

Free-agent reliever Greg Burke is headed to the Colorado Rockies on a minor league deal with a spring-training invite, a source told ESPNNewYork.com. Burke, 31, was removed from the 40-man roster last month and subsequently became a free agent. He had a 5.68 ERA in 32 relief appearances for the Mets last season. The Mets and Blue Jays also were believed to have made offers.

Mets Have Inquired About Free Agent Shin-Soo Choo

The Mets have reached out to super agent Scott Boras to express interest in free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, reports Mike Puma of the New York Post. No dollars or parameters for a deal were discussed according to a team official. That same team official also told Puma that other than Cano, there are no players the Mets will be in play on. Choo is expected to draw interest from...
