Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum says Carlos Marmol is out as closer and rookie Kyuji Fujikawa will take over the role. Marmol blew a save opportunity in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves when brothers B.J. and Justin Upton hit solo homers in the ninth inning. Sveum made the decision before Sunday's game. Fujikawa didn't fare much better in a three-run eighth that allowed Atlanta to cut the lead to 5-4, but Sveum says he has the makeup and repertoire of a closer. Fujikawa has 219 saves and a 1.77 ERA over 12 years with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan's Central League. Sveum indicated that Marmol, who has a 27.00 ERA in three appearances this season, will try to work out his problems in a setup role.

Cubs' Fujikawa kicks foul ball into own face

Yesterday, Chicago Cubs closer Kyuji Fujikawa might have become the first player in Major League Baseball history to kick a foul ball into his own face. It happened in the fifth inning of Monday afternoon's tilt between the Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers as Chicago outfielder Alfonso Soriano hit a foul ball near the Cubs bullpen. Watch as Fujikawa tries to stop it with his...

Kyuki Fujikawa kicks foul ball into his chin (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes. Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa had a bit of bad luck during Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers when a foul ball deflected off his foot and hit him in the chin. It happened in the bottom of the fourth inning as Cubs batter Alfonso Soriano hit a ground ball foul into the Cubs bullpen. Fujikawa tried to make a kick save...

Kyuji Fujikawa to replace Marmol as Cubs closer

Following Saturday’s meltdown the Chicago Cubs have removed Carlos Marmol from the closers role. Marmol blew a save after allowing two solo home runs in the inning. Marmol will be replaced by 32-year-old Kyuji Fujikawa according to Chicago Tribune writer Paul Sullivan. Entering the eighth inning the Cubs held a 5-1 lead over the Braves. Fujikawa pitched the eighth inning for the...

Carlos Marmol loses job as Cubs closer

Chicago Cubs closer Carlos Marmol has been pulled from his ninth inning role after his first blown save of the year last night in Atlanta. Kyuji Fujikawa will replace Marmol as the Cubs' fireman, according to reports. Marmol is actually reportedly taking the demotion well, stating "You can't complain about it. They say it's better for me and for the team. I&...

Carlos Marmol out as closer for Cubs

It was only a matter of time before the Chicago Cubs made a change.  Carlos Marmol has never proven himself capable of handling Major League closer duties.  He lost his job early last season only to earn it back.  And now, he's lost it again. Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago says the Cubs stripped Marmol of his closing duties after three outings that resulted in stressful...

Cubs Reliever Kyuji Fujikawa Will Not Be Playing Soccer Anytime Soon

The Chicago Cubs will most likely have a fairly terrible season, but at least they are already laughing at themselves. The only really good medicine for Cubs fans, myself included, is some good self deprecating humor and a few Old Style’s. During the Cubs 7-4 loss to the Brewers on Monday, reliever Kyuji Fujikawa was sitting in the bully and tried to field a foul ball by kicking...

Kyuji Fujikawa embarrassingly takes a foul ball off the face

Kyuji Fujikawa kicks a foul ball … into his own face

Boom, headshot?

Rank Relief: Our newly minted segment on the continued collapse of at least one reliver each night of the season.

Tonight’s guest:  Xavier Cedeno of the Houston Astros.  Everyone knows the Astros are not really trying to win this year so I try to cut them some slack, but this made Carlos Marmol look like Nolan Ryan.  At least Marmol got some people out.  Cedeno has only pitched 30 some innings in the majors and he’s going to wish he could start over after tonight.  Cedeno allowed 6...

Uptons make life more miserable for Marmol

BJ Upton (left) and Justin Upton became the first brothers in major league history to homer to tie, then win a game Saturday against Cubs closer Carlos Marmol. I mentioned earlier this week how Carlos Marmol has been absolutely dreadful for the Cubs. Now he’s so bad he’s in the record books. Marmol allowed the game-tying home run to B.J. Upton, then the walk-off winner to his...

Brewers look to spoil Cubs' home opener

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Cubs are on their second closer, and the season is only a week old. The Milwaukee Brewers are missing two key sluggers, and a third is struggling with a neck issue. This should be quite the opener at Wrigley Field. Chicago and Milwaukee are dealing with some early challenges heading into the first game of the season at the Cubs' longtime home on Monday...
