Pirates (73-51) at Padres (56-69) 10:10 PM–Petco Park, San Diego MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates look for two in a row and a road series win as they try to cling to their NL Central lead this evening. The trip got off to a great start last night, but another victory would mark back to back wins for the first time in a while and would certainly be refreshing to see. Tonight’s starters… A.J. Burnett (5-8, 3.18) vs. Tyson Ross (3-5, 2.62) Burnett’s numbers for the season are still very strong, but his last two starts have been quite concerning. After almost never getting run support, he got big leads and gave them up quickly – despite looking strong early in both outings. Going six or seven solid innings was not a problem for AJ earlier in the year, but he may be showing some signs of wearing down. Tonight is a very good  opportunity to buck the trend in a pitcher’s park against a bad team. Ross is having a really nice season after a disastrous 2012, and the righty has been especi...

A.J. Burnett and Pirates Offense Bounce Back Strong for 8-1 Victory

A.J. Burnett followed up Francisco Liriano’s seven strong innings with his own quality start. (Photo Credit: David Hague) SAN DIEGO — The one-two punch of Francisco Liriano and A.J. Burnett turned around the Pirates’ bad-luck losses by leading the charge on back-to-back wins. “Obviously you’re not gonna punch out 13 like [Liriano],” Burnett said. “At the same time you...

Burnett returns to form in Pirates' 8-1 win over Padres

A.J. Burnett had a lead before he took the mound Tuesday night. After that his usual serving of fastballs and knuckle curves did the trick. Burnett rebounded from two mediocre outings during the Pirates' 8-1 win against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park their second win in a row. The St. Louis Cardinals' loss Tuesday night meant that the Pirates took a two-game lead in...

AJ Burnett looks for Pirates' second straight win

The Pirates have tried to break out of their slump a few times in the last week, but they've had trouble stringing wins together since their 9-2 homestand. Part of the reason for that is that AJ Burnett has struggled a bit in his last two starts. He went into a slump in August and September last year, too, and that's one of the reasons that his calf injury didn't bother...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Diego Padres – Game 126

Don’t look now but it’s time to sweep these guys.  A.J. Burnett?  I see you homie.  That was EXACTLY what we needed from Burnett.  Answer the rumblings, go deep, get some breathing room in the division and inch closer to a playoff berth. Pirates on pace for 96 wins with 37 games to go —…

Pirates 8, Padres 1

A.J. Burnett threw seven strong innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates had six extra-base hits, including Neil Walker's home run, to beat the Padres 8-1 Tuesday night. Burnett (6-8) held San Diego to one run and four hits, struck out seven and walked one. He bounced back from two starts in which he allowed 10 earned runs and 16 hits in 10 innings. The right-hander improved to 2...

Presenting Maybe Baseball’s Very Worst Bunter

Just so no one’s offended, I want to make one thing very clear: I am not here to be overly critical of Tyson Ross, baseball player. Tyson Ross is a pretty good baseball player, who’s succeeding at his primary job. Right now he’s sitting on an ERA in the mid-2s. Over eight starts with the […]

Daily SP Rankings: Tuesday, August 20

Welcome back to another edition of our rankings! Hopefully these Daily SP Rankings are helping you make you all-important drop/add decisions! Note that there are 16 games tomorrow, but only 30 probable starters below. The Phillies and the Rangers haven’t announced their starters yet. Here are a trio of notes I have for Tuesday’s probable starters, which don’t exactly scream...

Game 125: Pirates 8 Padres 1

Let's see: a strong, seven-inning AJ Burnett start, a Pedro Alvarez triple (!), a two-run Andrew McCutchen triple, and a three-run Josh Harrison triple (with 'Cutch and Harrison's triples both coming in a five-run seventh inning), combined with a Cardinal loss and a Red loss.  Combine all this with Francisco Liriano's great start on Monday, and this road trip...

While You Were Drinking: Game 126 (SD vs. PIT)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. Tyson Ross was off his game last night but got the Padres into the 7th at 3-1 before the floodgates opened and the Pirates pushed ahead 8-1. This game was not a complete loss however. Well yes it was. But there was a positive: Jedd Gyorko...

Practice Fishing Now

Questions don’t make you a fisherman. Concentration makes you a fisherman. So practice. Practice fishing now – by concentrating on this ballgame. - David James Duncan, The Brothers K While a game between the Yankees and Indians plays on the television in July of 1960 Hugh “Smoke” Chance admonishes his son Kade for allowing himself to be distracted during Sunday morning baseball...

Daily Friar 8.21.13

A tough go-around for the Padres again last night. Tyson Ross got knocked around while struggling with his command, leaving too many pitches over the heart of the plate for Pirates hitters. Jedd Gyorko was the lone bright spot for the Padres’ offense with a solo blast in the bottom of the fourth inning. Unfortunately, they needed seven more of those to even tie the game, but today...

Five Good Things: Home, Split Home.

The Padres returned home from their unsatisfying road trip to host a four game series against a team who also had been struggling offensively. What was the result of the long series; a split. The Mets took the first two games while the Friars finished off the weekend with two straight victories of their own. Here are my five points of interest from this last weekends contest against...

First Pitch: The Reason the Pirates Could Be Successful For Many Years

Baseball teams pay ridiculous prices for pitching. The Texas Rangers just traded a top 50 prospect and three Grade B pitching prospects a month ago for two months of Matt Garza. Zack Greinke got $147 M over six years over the off-season. Anibal Sanchez got $80 M for five years, while Edwin Jackson got $52 M for four years. Even a 36-year-old starter like Ryan Dempster landed $13...

Daily Friar 8.20.13

On a positive note, the Padres out hit the Pirates yesterday six hits to five. Unfortunately, that’s the only positive I could find offensively, because overall, the team struggled to put the ball in play, striking out 17 times last night. Andrew Cashner had another solid outing for the Friars wasted, allowing three runs, one earned, and walking only two batters over seven innings...
