Found April 15, 2013 on Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Cardinals (7-5) at Pirates (6-6) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT We’re only twelve games in to the year, of course, but hey – there’s a top-tier NL Central showdown this week at PNC! The Cardinals sit in first place and the Bucs are a game behind in second. St. Louis has not changed a whole lot from its Wild Card team last season and is off to a pretty strong start. Before blowing a game late yesterday against the Brewers, they had thrown 39 consecutive scoreless innings. The Cards should certainly be contenders again, so this is another difficult series for the Pirates–although it’s another chance to make a statement. It’s a good thing the Bucs have some good momentum coming in to the week. Some quick news bits: Today is Jackie Robinson Day, so all the players will be wearing #42 tonight. Alex Presley was called up to replace Phil Irwin. Tonight’s starters… Lance Lynn (1-0, 4.50) vs. James McDonald (1-1, 3.75)  Lynn won 18 games for the Cards last season but...

First Pitch: All of the Warning Signs are There For a James McDonald Injury

All of the warning signs are there for a James McDonald injury. – Image Credit: David Hague After the first start of the year from James McDonald, I got a question. “What is up with his velocity? Is he injured?” McDonald’s velocity was down in the first game of the year. He ranged from about 87-92 MPH, but averaged 89 MPH with his fastball. Looking at this chart from FanGraphs...

Pirates Pregame: McDonald Still Searching for Consistency

James McDonald makes his third start of the 2013 season tonight with the St. Louis Cardinals visiting PNC Park, and one has to wonder which McDonald will be on the mound tonight for the Pirates. James McDonald will make his third start of the season tonight. Photo Credit: David Hague Will it be the James McDonald that was perhaps the best pitcher on the Pittsburgh staff during the...

Alex Presley joins the team

The #Pirates option RHP Phil Irwin to AAA Indianapolis and recall OF Alex Presley. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 15, 2013 As expected, the Pirates sent Phil Irwin back to Triple-A after yesterday’s spot start. I would not be surprised to see him back (and would still prefer him over Jonathan Sanchez, probably), but Irwin could probably benefit from some more time in the...

Pirates Recall Irwin, Option Josh Harrison to Triple-A

Phil Irwin is officially today’s starter. The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled Phil Irwin from Triple-A, and have optioned Josh Harrison to Triple-A. They’ve also officially announced Irwin as today’s starter. Since Irwin is a spot starter, I’d expect him to go back down after the game, with a position player coming up to replace Harrison on the bench. That position player...

Pittsburgh Pirates Recall Alex Presley From Minors

Pirates Pregame: Irwin’s Debut, Inge Update, Phillips Returns for Reds

Phil Irwin will make his major league debut today for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the club announced this morning. Irwin won 29 games in five seasons of minor league competition, and while wins and losses are not necisarily a good barometer for the developmental process in the minors, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Irwin’s presence made his teammates better which translated to success...

Cardinals 10, Pirates 6

This one started and ended with James McDonald. What an absolutely horrible performance. The Cardinals obliterated J-Mac, who looked absolutely helpless out on the mound against a team he dominated last season. The Pirates ended up having a pretty decent day at the plate but it didn’t matter. Thanks to some bad St. Louis baserunning and a couple hard-hit balls right at people,...

Game 13: Cardinals 10 Pirates 6

Buried somewhere beneath the final score is another nice outing for the Pirate offense against a Cardinal team that's been particularly stingy with runs of late, but that's not what anyone will or should be talking about in the aftermath of this game. Instead, there's going to be a lot of focus put on James McDonald's bad outing. If you've all you have to...

Pirates 10, Reds 7

WOW. We’ve got an early candidate for the best win of the season. The Pirates worked their way out of a 5-0 hole in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon to complete a sweep the hated Cincinnati Reds. That is awesome. Phil Irwin‘s major league debut didn’t go too well. He was visibly nervous and rattled in the first two innings, struggling with his control (which he almost never...

Game 12 Preview: Pirates vs. Reds

Reds (5-6) at Pirates (5-6) 1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs go for a sweep of the Reds this afternoon, which would obviously be awesome. They’ve won 4 of 5 while Cincinnati has lost 4 in a row, so momentum is on the Bucs’ side for sure. They may need it today with a tough matchup on the mound, but hey, they beat Cueto last night (well, kinda)...

First Pitch: Depth Can Quickly Disappear

Remember at the start of the year when the Pirates had a lot of starting pitching depth? Kyle McPherson had just missed out on the fifth starter role. Phil Irwin had some impressive outings in Spring Training, and looked like he could also be an early season option. Everyone hoped that Gerrit Cole’s demotion to Triple-A would only be a formality for a few weeks until he gained...

Cardinals jump on Pirates early in 10-6 win

PITTSBURGH (AP) Jon Jay and Matt Holliday each had two hits and two RBIs as the St. Louis Cardinals jumped on the Pittsburgh Pirates early in a 10-6 victory Monday night. Allen Craig doubled and drove in three runs for the Cardinals, who knocked around James McDonald (1-2) with a seven-run second inning. McDonald gave up eight runs, three earned, and walked two in 1 1-3 innings...

Minor League Schedule: 4/14/13

No starter has been named yet for Indianapolis today. Joely Rodriguez will be the first minor leaguer to make his third start of the year, when he goes today for West Virginia. Bradenton was able to pick up their first win of the season last night. All four games today are early afternoon starts. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable...
