Cubs (63-84) at Pirates (85-62)
7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh
The Bucs look to regain control of this weekend series as they take on the Cubs on a fireworks night. I’m sure PNC will be packed and it will not be to see the fireworks. The Pirates now sit a game back of St Louis and it would be foolish to count on them losing many down the stretch. They also still need to get that playoff magic number down – it’s still at nine since the Nats are on fire. The Pirates entered the day leading them by seven games.
Scott Baker (0-0, 0.00) vs. Gerrit Cole (7-7, 3.48)
Baker made his season debut in his last start and tossed five scoreless innings against the Brewers. He has faced injuries and hadn’t pitched in the majors since 2011 before that. For his career, he’s been a fairly average right handed starter.
Cole was sensational in his last outing and I’m sure fans are now wanting to see more of that, rather than the grind-it-out kind of guy the Bucs have gotten for most of his season. He’s been fine overall, but against Texas he showed the ability to be dominant, and if he can replicate that a few more times this year, that’ll be huge.
