Found April 21, 2013 on WHYGAVS?:
Here is Jonathan Sanchez's line from this afternoon:  3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K And here is Kris Medlen's line:  6 IP, 7 H, 3R, 1 BB, 6 K That's not a line that would seem to bear well for the Pirates, but they found a way anyway today, mostly on the bullpen and on Russell Martin. The bullpen was excellent today. Combined, they went six shutout innings, struck out eight, walked four, and gave up four hits. Jeanmar Gomez went 2 1/3 and struck out three hitters, which was nice to see after he opened the year with just one strikeout in his first seven innings. Justin Wilson relieved him in the sixth with runners on first and second and one out and immediately got BJ Upton to bounce into a double play. Wilson got the first two outs in the seventh, but came out when Evan Gattis doubled off of him to make way for Jared Hughes. Hughes struck Chris Johnson out on four pitches. Tony Watson came in in the eighth and was perfect. Jason Grilli allowed a leadoff walk ...

Pirates Win Thanks to an Improved McDonald and Strong Lineup Construction

James McDonald struck out nine batters tonight. Photo by Mark Olson Tonight wasn’t the type of game you’d normally expect the Pirates to win. It’s not the type of matchup you’d expect any team to win. On one side you had the best team in baseball, with a pitcher who entered the game with 20.1 shutout innings to start the season. On the other side you had a team that has been...

The Bullpen Didn’t Need Burnett’s Control Issues

A.J. Burnett struggled with his control tonight, leading to more innings from the bullpen. Looking at the stat line, A.J. Burnett didn’t have a terrible start. He gave up just two runs on five hits and three walks in five innings, while striking out seven. Looking beyond the stats, that start was definitely not what the Pirates needed right now. The bullpen is currently over-worked...

Prospect Watch: Bell Has a Big Day at the Plate, Cole Struggles With Control

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the pre-season rankings, and links to each prospect writeup can be...

Keys to the Atlanta Braves hot start

The Atlanta Braves have been the hottest team in baseball in April and they don’t look to slow down. As of Sunday, they were 13-4 and have a three game lead over the equally potent Washington Nationals. Atlanta’s hot start, has led many a forlorn Braves fan to hold a cautious optimism and are expecting a slump to follow just as bad as the start was good.... Read more

Prospect Watch: Sanchez Hits Walk Off Homer, Bad Start For Taillon

First Pitch: These Pirates Are Good, But…

In tonight’s game story, James Santelli broke down the great homestand the Pirates just had, and how impressive it was that they beat three teams who look like they’ll be heading to the playoffs this year. I thought about following up on that by looking back at what I’ve said over the last two years when the Pirates started to look promising. There have been times in each of...

Minor League Schedule: 4/21/13

Top prospect Gerrit Cole will get his fourth start of the season today, hoping to build off his first solid outing of the 2013 season. Altoona played a doubleheader last night, making up a Friday rainout. Francisco Liriano made his second rehab start in the first game. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable Pitchers Chart. We have...

Minor League Schedule: 4/23/13

In Altoona tonight, Charlie Morton will make his second rehab start as he makes his comeback from Tommy June Surgery last June. West Virginia had off yesterday. They resume play tonight on the road against Charleston. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable Pitchers Chart. We have added a Recent Transactions section to the bottom...

Pirates 4, Braves 2

What a homestand! The Pirates were somehow able to patch together a victory on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up an excellent series win over Atlanta. It was certainly a messy game, but that won’t stop any Bucco fan from being thrilled with the outcome. The main reason today’s win was so big was the pitching matchup. It was Jonathan Sanchez (ERA north of 12) against Kris Medlen ...

Pirates 3, Braves 1

The Pirates are on the good side of .500 for the first time this season thanks to another rock-solid win over the Atlanta Braves. Saturday night’s victory featured more fantastic pitching and just enough offense to get the job done. James McDonald remains impossible to understand. One start after completely imploding and looking like he had no business starting in the major leagues...

What's been ailing the Braves at the plate?

FOX Sports South caught up with play-by-play announcer Chip Caray to get his insight on the Braves. FOX SPORTS SOUTH: The Braves bats primarily went flat in Pittsburgh and they had the one game against the Royals in which they were shut out. What do you think is going on with this team offensively? CHIP CARAY: The offense we are seeing is the offense that was put together as advertised...

Phillies 3, Pirates 2

The Pirates’ momentum (and/or luck) ran out on Monday night, as the Phillies surprisingly outpitched them and were able to pull off a narrow one-run victory. The Bucs fall to 10-9 and now face an uphill climb for the rest of this four game set on the other side of the state. Over the weekend against the Braves, the Pirates won a couple of games in which the pitching matchup didn’t...

An old friend

When the Pirates play games like they did last night, with Wandy Rodriguez cruising on the mound and the defense clicking behind him and all sorts of guys coming up with big hit after big hit, it's actually sort of easy to watch them and think, "Seriously, this team could contend for a playoff spot." It's obviously early to talk about things like that when the team...

Snow forces postponement of Braves-Rockies game

Another snowstorm forced postponement of Monday night's game between the Atlanta Braves and the Colorado Rockies. The game was rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Tuesday, with the first game set for 1:10 p.m and the previously scheduled night game at 6:40 p.m. The postponement was the third in eight days at Coors Field because of snow. The Rockies and New York Mets...

On the road

The Pirates are 10-8. They're hitting the ball well and besides uneven starting pitching, playing a brand of baseball that I think we can fairly call "very good" over the last two weeks. They're coming off of a 7-2 homestand against the Reds, Cardinals, and Braves. Still, it feels like they're stuck in a sort of no man's land right now. Francisco Liriano...
