DETROIT (AP) -- A rookie vs. the reigning MVP. That's a fitting way for the Oakland Athletics to start the postseason. The A's will send Jarrod Parker (13-8) to the mound against Detroit ace Justin Verlander (17-8) in Game 1 of the division series Saturday night. The AL Central-champion Tigers are making their second straight playoff appearance, but Oakland emerged as one of the game's biggest surprises by winning the AL West. Now the A's have to contend with Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera -- the Detroit third baseman who might win the American League MVP after Verlander took the award last year. The Tigers swept Oakland in the 2006 AL championship series. This is the first postseason appearance for the A's since then.

Verlander solid in Tigers' Game 1 win

DETROIT -- Don't think that a player as competitive as Justin Verlander doesn't know what his postseason record is or what the expectations are of him. In eight postseason starts, Verlander was 3-3 with a 5.57 ERA. Not very Cy Young or MVP-like, even when you consider those first four starts came when he was a rookie in 2006 and was -- in his words -- "gassed"...

Parker's error helps Tigers beat A's 3-1 in Game 1

Jarrod Parker pitched well enough to keep Oakland in the game against Detroit. Trying to field his position proved costly to the Athletics. The Detroit Tigers, led by ace Justin Verlander, beat the Oakland A's 3-1 in game one of the American League Division Series on Saturday night to take a 1-0 series lead.
