New York Yankees (0-2) 6 — Tampa Bay Rays (2-0) 8

Early issues were too much to overcome despite a 9th-inning rally in tonight’s 8-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Hiroki Kuroda made his Yankees debut in tonight’s game and backup infielder Eduardo Nunez immediately committed his first error of the season on what appeared to be a routine ground ball. A pair of walks in the 1st inning set into motion a two-run first inning that went on much longer than it probably should have. The Rays aggressive approach towards Kuroda continued paying off in the following innings as they put up two more runs. Kuroda’s debut outing went 5.2 innings with 6 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits with 4 walks. This outing will make some Yankees fans question his capabilities in the American League.

The Yankees offense was shut down by masterful defense. The defense was positioned wherever the Yankees managed to put the ball in play as numerous attempts to rally for a big inning were caught. The long ball can’t be defended and Nick Swisher managed to cut the deficit to two with a three-run blast deep into right field. After a walk by Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez hit into the teeth of another defensive shift put in place and ended the comeback attempt.

Win – David Price (1-0)

Loss – Hiroki Kuroda (0-1)

Save – Fernando Rodney (1)

*Nick Swisher – 1 for 3, R, 2 BB, 3-Run Home Run (1) in the 9th, 3 RBI (4)

*Andruw Jones – 1 for 3, R, RBI (1)

*Matt Joyce – 2 for 3, 2 R, BB, Solo Home Run (1) in the 3rd, 3 RBI (3)

*Luke Scott – 3 for 4, R, 2B, 3 RBI (3)

Current Yankees Record: 0-2

Yankees play with Harlem Globetrotters

CC Sabathia’s appearance at a Harlem Globetrotters game could have been some foreshadowing for his disappointing opening day start. During a break in their preseason schedule, New York Yankees CC Sabathia, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Swisher participated in a Harlem Globetrotter’s showcase. CC struggled with this version of baseball, as one of the Globetrotters launched...

Do you think the Yankees are in trouble?

Joe Maddon (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Do you think the New York Yankees are in trouble? Well, the Yankees are off to a horrid start to the 2012 season, as they got out pitched, out hit and out managed by the Tampa Bay Rays who swept the Bombers right out of Tropicana Field this past weekend. Even though it is the beginning of the season, I was embarrassed for the Yankees, as it...

Rays try to sweep Yankees in opening series

The New York Yankees are seeking to avoid their first 0-3 start since 1998, although that season turned out just fine. The Tampa Bay Rays, meanwhile, have started with three wins just once in franchise history. The Rays have won five straight at home against the Yankees for the first time heading into Sunday's finale of this opening series. New York has gotten poor...

Yankees P Pettitte tosses 45 pitches in bullpen session

New York Yankees lefthander Andy Pettitte threw 45 pitches in a bullpen session Friday morning. Pettitte, who came out of retirement and signed a one-year contract with New York, is expected to pitch Monday, most likely in an extended spring training game. The Yankees are hoping that Pettitte, who will turn 40 in June, will be ready to join the starting rotation by May. Pettitte...

Rivera has rare blown save, Rays beat Yankees

Mariano Rivera took the blame for a rare blown save. Carlos Pena hit an early grand slam off CC Sabathia, then completed a ninth-inning comeback with an RBI single off the New York closer that lifted the Tampa Bay Rays to a season-opening 7-6 victory over the Yankees on Friday. ''My fault,'' Rivera said. ''I felt good. I don't make excuses. I just left...

25 Yankees, 25 Questions

Opening Day is a time for celebration, a time for joy and good feelings.  It is also a time to evaluate the state of your team (and possibly overreact to an Opening Day loss).  But hey, that’s the fun of it.  Let’s take a look at the entire 2012 Yankees roster and answer the hard-hitting questions everyone wants to know: Infielders 1: Will Teixeira hit .281 this season? ...

Line of the Day: Jeremy Hellickson

Reigning AL Rookie of the Year Jeremy Hellickson of the Tampa Bay Rays shut out the New York Yankees for 8 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out four in a 3-0 victory. The win completed the opening series sweep of the Yanks. Line: 8.2 IP | 3 H| 0 ER | 4 BB | 4 K; W (1-0) | QS My fantasy perspective: Hellickson picked up right where he left off. His 2011...
