New York Yankees 6 — Baltimore Orioles 2

A perfect night at the plate by Derek Jeter and 7 innings from Ivan Nova got the Yankees their first win of the season in tonight’s 6-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Derek Jeter was 4 for 4 at the plate and he brought in 1 run. The Orioles starting pitcher Brian Matusz lasted just 4 innings as control was an issue for him with 4 walks. Andruw Jones made a tremendous impact with a home run off of Darren O’Day. Besides Jones and Jeter, four other Yankees each brought in a run as well.

Ivan Nova took the mound after a shaky Spring Training and showed that the regular season hot streak he ended 2011 with carried over into 2012. In his 7 innings of work, he gave up 10 hits but only 2 runs, one on a home run by catcher Matt Wieters. Mariano Rivera finished off the first win of the Yankees season with one strikeout despite giving up some hard hit outs and a double.

Venditte on the doorstep to the majors

If you have the opportunity to take in a minor league game involving the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (or the Empire State Yankees for the 2012 season), you may notice something that will cause a double take.  Should No. 58 trot out to the pitchers mound, you might want to pay attention because you might see something that hasn’t been done but once in baseball’s modern era...

Pineda continues throwing, waits to get into a game

Michael Pineda spent some time playing catch under the watch of Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild, who helped him with a few things mechanically, last week. This week he has been doing long tossing program. There is no word on when he’ll get back on the mound, but that seems like the next step that everyone is waiting for. The first step to getting on a mound would be...

Do you think the Yankees are in trouble?

Joe Maddon (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Do you think the New York Yankees are in trouble? Well, the Yankees are off to a horrid start to the 2012 season, as they got out pitched, out hit and out managed by the Tampa Bay Rays who swept the Bombers right out of Tropicana Field this past weekend. Even though it is the beginning of the season, I was embarrassed for the Yankees, as it...

Tales of a Yankees fan living in diaspora

“Yankees suck, Yankees suck,” it’s a common chant, but for most of you Yankee fans, it’s something you probably only hear on TV. Me? Well, I’ve been living in what I like to refer to as the diaspora for much of the last fifteen years, so when I get to see my team play live, it’s in road grays and it’s at the opposing team’s stadium. Even my cat, Thurman, is gray...

No time to panic but concerns of Yankees slow start

After an understated yet solid offseason, this is not what Yankee fans had in mind. Boston suffers from a total and utter lack of pitching? Maybe. Rays charge out at the hand of a heavy hitting offense? Perhaps. Yankees look all around sorry, while the Orioles blast off to a first-series sweep? No way. I looked at the last ten missed playoffs for the Bombers to see if there was...

Maxwell homers in Houston debut

HOUSTON- Nameplates are often last on the checklist in the frenzy of player transactions, thus while Justin Maxwell was sufficiently outfitted for his Astros debut and announced his arrival with a two-run, pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning on Monday night at Minute Maid Park, the space next to the No. 22 above his locker remained blank afterward. That logistical hazard did...
