New York Yankees 5 — Detroit Tigers 1

Phil Hughes went the distance in today’s 5-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.

In a match-up between reigning Cy Young and MVP winner Justin Verlander against Yankees starter Phil Hughes, Hughes outdueled Verlander. In his first (actual) complete game, Hughes only gave up 1 run on 4 hits with 8 strikeouts. The lone run came on a deep home run to right field by Prince Fielder in the 4th inning. Today’s start was a great bounce back start after giving up a career-high 11 hits to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Hughes was able to silence one of the best hitters in the league, Miguel Cabrera, including striking him out two times.

Derek Jeter immediately put a sour start to Verlander’s start as he took the first pitch deep to right field to give the Yankees an early lead. The Yankees managed two early runs off of Verlander and Alex Rodriguez also found a pitch to hit. The Yankees third baseman hit a home run to deep center field, one of the farthest home runs at Comerica Park. A run-scoring triple by Robinson Cano brought in two runs as an error by Tigers second baseman Danny Worth went out of play and let Cano come in to score as well. Despite scoring 5 runs, the Yankees inability to hit with runners in scoring position continues to be evident as they went 1 for 11 in those situations.

Loss – Justin Verlander (5-4)
