The Pirates didn't play a very good game on Wednesday. That pretty much goes without saying. Brad Lincoln had a tough start, getting touched up for five runs in four innings. Johnny Cueto dominated the Pirates for much of the night, holding them to just three hits in his first seven innings of work. For a long portion of the game, the Pirates seemed headed for their usual, ineffectual loss. The game had one moment, though, where it looked like it could be something else. With the Pirates down 5-1 and finally getting to Cueto, Dusty Baker came out and removed his starter in favor of Logan Ondrusek. Ondrusek's been a solid righty out of the pen for him for the last couple of seasons or so, and he didn't want his flagging starter facing Andrew McCutchen. He knew that if 'Cutch came through with a big hit, that it'd be a different ballgame. McCutchen took Ondrusek's first pitch for a strike, then sent the second one rocketing over the right-center fence, pulling ...

Kris Watts traded to Nationals for cash

The #Pirates have traded minor league catcher Kris Watts to Washington in exchange for cash considerations. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) June 8, 2012   A lot of talk was going around about the Indianapolis Indians having four catchers on their roster after Tony Sanchez was promoted earlier this week. That situation seems to have been taken care of as the Bucs are shipping Kris...

Karstens' new injury could pave way for Owens to crack Pirates' rotation

Even if the Pirates' superb pitching begins to sputter -- and it surely didn't through the 5-4 victory Thursday night in Cincinnati -- they have no shortage of solutions. Yes, even with Jeff Karstens getting reinjured in a rehabilitation start Thursday night. Prospect Rudy Owens, a 24-year-old lefty, is banging down the door at Triple-A Indianapolis with a 4-2 record...

Battlin’ Bucs best Reds

Every win is enjoyable, but this one really meant a lot for the Pirates. It was a back-and-forth contest on the road with the division leader, and they ended up pulling it off in improbable fashion to win the series (their fourth in a row) and complete a winning road trip.  Awesome. For some reason, all the Pirates wins on this road trip started off pretty poorly. This game was...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds – Game 55

Did anyone really see homers from Neil Walker, Casey McGehee, and Alex Presley coming?  I sure didn’t. That said for how bad the offense has been they haven’t been completely inept at hitting the long ball.  I mean tied for 20th is no great shakes but it’s much better than the 28th their SLG ranks. [...]

Game 55: Pirates 4, Reds 5

After the Reds lost the first game of the series, I was a little nervous that the Pirates might really sweep the series and come into a tie for first. But now the Buccos will have to hope for another series to do that, since the Reds won last night, 4-5. Johnny Cueto started for the Reds, and it was Good Cueto this time. He went 7.2 innings with 3 runs (earned) on 6 hits and a walk...

Daily Brief: Down early to the Pirates

Last Game The Reds dropped the series opener to the Pirates in spectacular form, 8-4. Homer Bailey, who previously owned the Pirates, got totally lit up. Next Game Tonight Johnny Cueto (5-3, 2.54 ERA) goes out for revenge. He’s facing off against Brad Lincoln (3-0, 1.04 ERA). Cueto’s been good and Cueto’s been bad the last few starts, but we really need good Cueto tonight...

Reds sink Pirates, 5-4

Word is this guy's alright. The Redlegs were able to wash away the bad taste left in their mouths after a loss in game one of the series against the Buccos by holding on for a 5-4 victory. With the win, the good guys move to 30-24 on the season while dropping their divisional rival to 28-26. By using the trusty blueprint of strong starting pitching, timely...
