Last night the Reds lost a game to the Pirates 5-4 in extra innings. Mike Leake took the mound for the Reds and gave an adequate performance. He allowed 4 runs (earned) over 7 innings of work on 7 hits. He was relieved by Sean Marshall, who worked an inning hitless, and then Jose Arredondo who did the same. Typical Reds relievers this year. The surprise was when Aroldis Chapman came in to pitch the 10th and simply wasn’t on. He promptly gave up a long automatic double to Clint Barmes … [visit site to read more]

Game 55: Pirates 4, Reds 5

After the Reds lost the first game of the series, I was a little nervous that the Pirates might really sweep the series and come into a tie for first. But now the Buccos will have to hope for another series to do that, since the Reds won last night, 4-5. Johnny Cueto started for the Reds, and it was Good Cueto this time. He went 7.2 innings with 3 runs (earned) on 6 hits and a walk...

All-time Reds draft roster

Cincinnati took Bench with their second pick in the 1965 Draft. That turned out to be a very, very good decision. David Schoenfield, who writes the SweetSpot blog on ESPN.com, has been hard at work publishing a series of all-time draft rosters for every MLB team. On the eve of the Draft on Monday, he released his selections for all six NL Central franchises. Here...

The elephant in the room

The Reds sent Mat Latos, Chris Heisey, and Zack Cozart to the Cincinnati Zoo yesterday as part of the “Zoo Day” festivities. This apparently involved hosing down an elephant. I only saw this photo on Facebook. Apparently other news … [visit site to read more]

Squeeze bunt sends Reds over Tigers in 10

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Wilson Valdez's squeeze bunt with one out in the 10th inning scored Miguel Cairo and sent the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Cairo started the rally against left-hander Phil Coke (1-2) with his first triple of the season, the ball skittering out of the right-field corner and eluding Matt Young. One out later, Valdez...

Reds sink Pirates, 5-4

Word is this guy's alright. The Redlegs were able to wash away the bad taste left in their mouths after a loss in game one of the series against the Buccos by holding on for a 5-4 victory. With the win, the good guys move to 30-24 on the season while dropping their divisional rival to 28-26. By using the trusty blueprint of strong starting pitching, timely...

Redlegs put the squeeze on Tigers, walkoff with a victory

All is well that ends well It may have taken an extra inning and a bit of drama to do so, but the Redlegs (32-25) succeeded in upending the visiting Tigers (26-32) by a score of 6-5 in ten innings on Friday. Miguel Cairo led off the home half of the tenth with a batted ball that rattled around in the right field corner, thus helping the utilityman reach third base via triple...

Your Saturday Baseball Open Thread

Bachelor party in Cincinnati complete, and no one died. We witnessed a couple of 10-inning beauties, one a 5-4 loss to the Pirates where Aroldis Chapman gave up the first run of his 2012 season. Last night’s 6-5 win in extras over the Tigers was one of the more exciting games I’ve been to in a long time. Pretty good sports Saturday on tap. Not just a full slate of baseball on...

Battlin’ Bucs best Reds

Every win is enjoyable, but this one really meant a lot for the Pirates. It was a back-and-forth contest on the road with the division leader, and they ended up pulling it off in improbable fashion to win the series (their fourth in a row) and complete a winning road trip.  Awesome. For some reason, all the Pirates wins on this road trip started off pretty poorly. This game was...
