Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Dodgers (29-38) at Pirates (40-28)
1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh
TV: ROOT, TBS
The Bucs and Dodgers battle in a rubber match this afternoon on a rainy Father’s Day in Pittsburgh.
Brandon Cumpton will start again on Thursday, his next scheduled turn in the rotation.
Starling Marte is still out.
Russell Martin was scratched with a lower body injury.
Zack Greinke (3-1, 3.68) vs. Gerrit Cole (1-0, 2.84)
Greinke represents another big test for the Pirate offense. The big-money righty has been solid for the Dodgers so far this year (when healthy) but has also been in the middle of two big brawls. The Pirates have enough injuries to deal with so hopefully there are no more fireworks today.
Cole is making his second start after an impressive first one that received plenty of fanfare. Everyone is surely looking forward to seeing him again, and the Pirates are going to rely on him a bit now that their two veteran starters are on the DL. It’ll b...

The Pittsburgh Pirates have added right-handed pitcher Brandon Cumpton to the 40-man roster for his start tonight. To make room, they have designated left-handed Mike Zagurski for assignment. The DFA of Zagurski also clears a spot for Cumpton on the 25-man roster.
The DFA of Zagurski doesn’t come as a surprise...
On Saturday, the Pirates called up AAA pitcher Brandon Cumpton to make a start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Adding another pitcher was huge, seeing that the starting rotation was slowly settling in with super-rook Gerrit Cole making his vaunted debut earlier in the week. Cumpton one-upped his more-highly-lauded teammate in the strikeout department, striking out the side in the...
I didn’t have one specific thing I wanted to write about, but a few notes I was thinking about. So I went with more of a notes column, with three different topics below.
Jeff Locke hasn’t regressed, but instead has improved his game.
**About a month ago we were talking about Jeff Locke being a regression candidate going forward. That sparked the usual responses of “what if...
Clint Hurdle confirmed Brandon Cumpton will make his MLB debut Saturday afternoon.
Let’s review the Pirates’ scheduled starting rotation following the news that Brandon Cumpton will take the place of injured A.J. Burnett.
Friday: Jeff Locke
Saturday: Brandon Cumpton (MLB Debut)
Sunday: Gerrit Cole
Monday: Francisco Liriano
Tuesday: Charlie Morton...

Yes, that was Gerrit Cole making his second Major League start Sunday, even though you could have easily confused it for a replay of his debut. The phenom prospect threw the same number of fastballs, allowed the same number of...
Sunday’s 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates could have been avoided by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
First, had the storm that caused an 1.5-hour rain delay before first pitch not let up, the game might not have been played. More substantially, had Zack Greinke not thrown two crucial mistake pitches, things might have panned out better for Los Angeles.
Instead, big hits from Garrett...
The Pirates fell to the Dodgers in a wild, wild game on Saturday afternoon, evening this weekend’s series.
Brandon Cumpton immediately caught everyone’s attention with an incredible start to his big league debut. The righty isn’t known as a big strikeout guy, but he went right at the Dodgers and struck out all three batters in the first inning – then tacked on two more in...
Rookie Gerrit Cole won again, getting home run help from Pedro Alvarez and pitching the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-3 Sunday.
Cole (2-0) allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks in 5 2-3 innings. The top pick from the 2011 draft won in his big league debut last week.
Alvarez snapped a 2-all tie when he connected off Zack Greinke (3-2) for a three-run...
In the last few weeks the Pittsburgh Pirates have made a lot of prospect promotions. Gerrit Cole was promoted to the majors. Andrew Lambo and Stolmy Pimentel moved up to Triple-A. This week saw Nick Kingham and Gregory Polanco get promotions to Altoona. With half of the minor league season in the books, we should start seeing more and more moves.
I get asked “When will Player A...
The Super Two deadline apparently has passed, which explains why several big-time prospects have been promoted (Gerrit Cole and Mike Zunino) or will be soon (Wil Myers and Zach Wheeler). All four phenoms could crack the Rookie Watch in the coming months. In the meantime, here's our weekly look at the majors' top five rookies of the moment (all stats through Monday).

You want answers, I've got answers, courtesy of sources familiar with the suspensions that baseball issued Friday for the Dodgers-Diamondbacks brawl.
- Why only 10 games for Diamondbacks right-hander Ian Kennedy?
Kennedy threw at Zack Greinke's head after the umpires issued warnings to both clubs. It's certainly fair to ask why Kennedy's penalty likely will amount...
