Mets (40-50) at Pirates (56-36) 1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates go for a sweep of the Mets today, and a win would clinch a share of first place and baseball’s best record heading in to the four-day All Star break. You know what else a win would do? It would tie the club record for most wins before the All Star break (1971 – when they won the World Series). It would also EQUAL THE TEAM’S ENTIRE WIN TOTAL IN 2010. That’s insane. Today’s starters… Dillon Gee (6-7, 4.80) vs. Gerrit Cole (4-2, 3.68) The Pirates have played the Mets six times this year and lost once – Gee started that game, back in New York in May. He has owned the Pirates in four career starts (2-0, 1.73) and allowed one run over five innings in a no decision that day. He’s been inconsistent over his last four starts, posting two very good outings but two others in which he allowed five earned runs. Cole may have pitched his best major league game in his last start but took the tough luck 2-1 loss to Oakland. He’s being moved up into this start because off Jeff Locke‘s “back tightness” but is on normal rest thanks to the off day Thursday. The Bucs might look to limit Cole’s innings here and there, but they are certainly being aggressive with the righty for now – it would have been easy to send him to Indy over the break to get some rest without missing much.
