Cardinals (71-57) at Pirates (68-60)

7:05 PM EST–PNC Park, Pittsburgh

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

TV: ROOT Sports

The Bucs take on the Cardinals in game two of this pivotal series. After dropping last night’s contest, the Pirates desperately need to win one of the remaining games to keep a pulse in the race. Two of three would be great, but they have to win one first.

News: Chase d’Arnaud was called up to fill Erik Bedard‘s spot on the roster. As I mentioned earlier, the Bucs don’t need to add a pitcher until Bedard’s next scheduled start comes around on September 1, so for now they’re just going with a bench player. d’Arnaud still hasn’t done much of anything at the plate in Indy, but neither has anyone else and he’s been hot over the last week. He also offers something no other Pirate has: base stealing ability (33 SB, 5 CS this year). Look for him to pinch run in a big spot late in games.

Tonight’s starters…

Jake Westbrook (13-9, 3.67) vs. James McDonald  (11-6, 3.73)

Westbrook has been solid lately, although he allowed five runs against the Astros in his last start. The Bucs have hit him pretty well in the past, although they only scored one earned run the last time they faced (and beat) him.

McDonald was awesome at St. Louis two weeks ago, but took a step back in his most recent start at San Diego. Who knows which J-Mac will show up tonight? There’s reason to at least hope for the good one, since he’s shown flashes of good signs even in his bad starts. Still, the Pirates need him to get it together. Now.
