Pirates (49-39) at Rockies (34-54)

8:40 PM EST–Coors Field, Denver

Here is the MLB.com Gameday

TV: ROOT Sports

The Pirates head out west to Denver for the second series of this road trip, as they look to turn it around after a somewhat disappointing weekend in Milwaukee. They’re now a game out of first place–the Reds are on fire and swept the Cardinals this weekend. Cincinnati hosts Arizona this week, so maybe Justin Upton can help the Bucs out without getting traded!

The Rockies are awful. They’re the second-worst team in baseball (ahead of only Houston, and not by much) largely thanks to a dreadful pitching staff. Yes, the ballpark hurts their numbers, but only one Rox starter has an ERA under 5…and the Pirates won’t face him this week. They’ve got a decent offense (again, assisted by the ballpark) but the Pirates should be able overcome that some big offensive numbers of their own this week if they can get over the strikeout plague that struck in Milwaukee.

Tonight’s starters…

Jeff Karstens (2-2, 3.94) vs. Jeff Francis (2-2, 5.19)

Karstens was awesome in his last start, going eight shutout innings in an easy victory over the Astros. The Rockies have a better lineup and Coors Field isn’t an easy place to pitch, but Jeff has looked very good lately and I’m expecting a strong start.

Francis–the subject of plenty of offseason rumors for the Pirates over the last few years–is a pretty mediocre lefty. He’s not terrible, but isn’t much of a threat to go deep in to a game or to put up big strikeout numbers.
