Add another one to a list of key injuries for the New York Yankees.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi expects leadoff hitter Brett Gardner will be out for a lengthy stretch and possibly the rest of the regular season.
Girardi made the announcement before New York opened a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday night.
Gardner left Thursday night's win in Baltimore with the injury, which Girardi said is a ''Grade 1 strain in his rib cage.'' He's batting .273 with eight homers and 52 RBIs and a big part of New York's injury-ravaged offense.
''He's going to be out a while,'' Girardi said. ''Rib cages don't heal real quick. It's not like it's just a few days. Is it possible it could be the rest of the year? Yeah.''
It's the latest in a season filled with injuries for the Yankees, who entered Friday one game back in the AL's wild card chase.
''I'm almost at the point...

Brett Gardner suffered a strained left oblique in the first inning of Thursday’s game against Baltimore. The injury occurred on a check swing.
Garnder’s season could be over if the Yankees fail to make the post season as these injuries typically take two to three weeks to come back from.
Left oblique strain for Brett Gardner. That can easily be a 2-3 week problem...

If someone told you a month ago that, with two weeks left in the season the Yankees would only be a game out of the second Wild Card spot, would you have believed them? Oh, come on. You know you wouldn't have. That is exactly where the Yankees are. There are 15 games left and, if they win most of them, they will be, at the very least, playing in the one game playoff. It won...
New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was forced to exit Tuesday's game early after tweaking his left hamstring. While he was still experiencing discomfort yesterday, he was "ready to go" enough to suit up as the team's designated hitter.
Rodriguez told reporters -- including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com -- that he could feel a knot in the lower part of his...
The New York Yankees activated pitcher David Phelps from the 60-Day DL Saturday according to the Yankees official Twitter page. The team moved Derek Jeter to the 60-Day DL to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Phelps.
The Yankees originally placed Phelps on the DL with a forearm strain on July 6 two days after he allowed four runs in six innings against the Twins. He had only...
When New York Yankees catcher Austin Romine was forced to exit a game earlier this week after taking a foul ball off his mask, there was suspicion that he had suffered a concussion. That was officially diagnosed, and manager Joe Girardi told reporters -- including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com -- that Romine will be shut down for a few days before being re-evaluated.

New York Yankees 4 – Boston Red Sox 8
Gritty comeback efforts go for nothing in tonight’s 8-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
In the first inning, the Red Sox sent John Lackey to the mound and the Yankees took advantage of the defensive alignments. With two outs and a heavily shifted to the right side infield, Robinson Cano dropped the perfect bunt...
Who is the “Face of Baseball?”
That was the question that the folks at ESPN.com wanted answered, so they turned to Turnkey Intelligence, one of America’s most prominent sports-polling firms. The results were not only interesting, but they might also be enough to keep MLB commissioner Bud Selig up at night.
ESPN.com reports that Alex Rodriguez was the first player named by 22...

New York Yankees 1 — Boston Red Sox 5
Offense held down by Jon Lester in today’s 5-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
CC Sabathia got today’s start and had a perfect first inning but it went downhill from there. Mike Napoli would hit an infield single that Mark Reynolds would field at third base. The throw from Reynolds would go wide of first and...

CC Sabathia (13-12, 4.82 ERA) continues the hunt for the Yanks for October, standing in his way is Jon Lester (13-8 3.86 ERA.) Sabathia was outpitched by the Orioles’ Chris Tillman in his last outing, taking the loss after allowing three earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. He is 2-1 with a bloated 7.15 ERA in four starts against Boston this year.
Lester has been tremendous in the second...
Tonight, the Boston Red Sox will honor New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera before Sunday's game, which will be Mariano's last game at Fenway Park, barring a playoff match up (not likely, though). Rivera announced before this season started that he would be retiring at the end of the season. It's the ultimate gesture of respect when...
